Soulmate AU: soulmates tend to share emotions (if one of them is angry the other may be irritated for 'no reason'), and a strip of your hair is the same color as your soulmate's

You fluffed up your blue hair in the mirror, still amazed by the brand new color. You had gotten it colored last night so it still didn't look like your reflection in the mirror.

"Hey (Y/N)." You turned at the call, seeing your friend Peter walking up to you.

"I'm surprised you recognized me." You flicked your hair as you said it, seeing his eyes take in the new color.

"It's a nice color on you." He shuffled his feet as you smiled.

"Thanks honey." You blew him a kiss and shut your locker, leading the way to your next class.

"Hey (Y/N)." You turned to him again, quirking a brow. "What's your natural hair color?" You thought for a moment; it had been a while since you left it undyed.

"(H/C), why?"

"No reason." He ran a hand through his hair, the brown fluff only broken by a (H/C) streak. [If your hair is naturally brown, congratulations, you get to pick a new hair color! Or pretend it's a different shade of brown, up to you.] You eyed the movement suspiciously. It was common for people to ask around to figure out who was their soulmate, some even tried to get angry or sad or slammed their pinkie toe into a corner just to see who reacted. You thought it was quite silly.

"I've told you, honey, I don't care for that soulmate stuff." You turned back around, missing the disappointment in his eyes.

"I know, I just think you should give it a chance. Your soulmate is out there somewhere." His hopeful words were met with a soft laugh.

"I don't think the universe should get to decide who I end up with." You placed a hand on his cheek. "And you shouldn't be so obsessed with finding out who your soulmate is." He frowned, looking like a puppy as he sulked.

"You never told me what color hair your soulmate has."

"And I don't plan on it. Why do you think I keep dying my hair?" You grinned at him and took your seat, pulling out your notebook to jot notes down on as he slid into the seat next to you. Truth be told, you were uncomfortable with the whole soulmate topic. You'd think by now you'd be used to it, but with how obsessed everyone seemed to be with finding their forever partner, you never could get comfortable.

As Peter took out his notebook, the pages slid against his finger and he jerked back. You hissed at the same time, grimacing at the sight as he looked down at his finger. Yep, a papercut. "That looked like it hurt," you said, sending him a sympathetic look.

"If I didn't know any better, you reacted like you felt that." He was eyeing you closely and you quickly looked down.

"Nah, I just noticed. I know how badly those hurt." The look he sent you was distrustful, so you mimicked it. "What?"

"You're hiding something from me."

"I am not." Thankfully the teacher decided to cut in, saving you the uncomfortable conversation. Unfortunately for you, you didn't think it was over that easily.

ーーー

You were right. As you both walked to your shared apartment building, he grilled you some more. As you continued to insist that you weren't hiding anything, he continued to insist you were. "Honey, what would I even have to hide? We've been joined at the hip for years. I can't hide anything from you." You unlocked your apartment and stepped inside, Peter following you over to the couch.

"Are we soulmates?" Your steps faltered at the question and you nearly tripped. You turned to look at him, shocked. He alternated between looking at you and the floor.

"I've been watching you- wait, that sounds creepy. When we've been hanging out, we're basically always feeling the exact same thing, and you react when something happens to me, like you feel it too. And I've got this." His fingers ran over the streak in his hair that matched your natural hair, and you sighed.

"I was really hoping you wouldn't ask."

"Why?"

You chewed on your lip a moment, trying to figure out how to say it, before sighing and sitting down on the couch. "Look, Peter, I don't really like talking about this, but since we're such good friends-" he flinched "-I think it's time you knew. I...don't have a soulmate." His jaw dropped as your eyes fell to the floor, shame coloring your cheeks. You did your best to hide it with the blue of your hair, but it didn't rid the feeling in your gut.

"What do you mean?" he whispered.

"Apparently there's some kind of genetic thing that indicates I won't get a soulmate, and my parents had me tested when my hair all looked the same. Like sure, my soulmate could have my same hair color, but they check the DNA on the hair, and apparently there's traces of your soulmate's DNA on your hair if you have a soulmate. Well, mine didn't have that. That and I don't feel random emotions, I don't feel connected to anybody, and there's kind of an empty feeling...I don't know how to describe it, but it's like I'm not whole." You tasted blood as you realized you had dug your teeth too far into your lip, and you sighed. "Hence the reason I don't really like talking about soulmates. I'm alone."

He swallowed nervously, unsure how to break the tense atmosphere. After a moment, he cleared his throat. "I'm sorry," was all he could come up with.

"It's alright." You wiped at your eyes and smiled stiffly. "I'm used to it. So to answer your question: no I'm not your soulmate."

"I'm sorry," he said again.

"Nothing to be sorry about. I guess you can stop pining after me now." The grin was completely innocent but it still made his head jerk up.

"What?"

"I know you've had a crush on me forever." You laughed, just happy to be off that uncomfortable subject. He stammered out what you assumed was meant to be a response, but he couldn't come up with any actual coherent thoughts so he shut his mouth. "But since we're not soulmates, you can put that energy into someone else now."

"What if we forgot the whole soulmate thing?" It was your turn to be at a loss of words. "Would you still wanna...you know, try this?" He pointed to the two of you.

"Why would you wanna be with me?" The words came out in a whisper.

"Because I like you," he mumbled, still embarrassed about it despite you knowing for years.

"I don't have a soulmate, that means I'm unlovable-"

"But I love you." You stared at each other, unsure of who was more shocked. You tried to come up with a response, but your mind was blank. You knew you'd never have a soulmate, so that meant the universe determined you unable to be a good fit for anyone. You weren't made to be loved. Yet this adorable nerd insisted you were still worth loving.

"Well, um, then I guess we could try this."

"Really?" He nearly jumped out of his seat in excitement, and you found yourself smiling despite the sinking in your gut.

"Yeah, really." Surely this would turn out alright, wouldn't it?
