AU: you see in black and white (and gray) until you see your soulmate, in which all the colors of the rainbow are introduced to you. If you don't look at your soulmate again in a while your vision will slowly return to black and white (your vision will be colorless after a week). And, if your soulmate dies, your vision will revert to and permanently stay black and white.

They say the whole reason you lose the ability to see color after being apart from your soulmate is to make you look at them. I mean, why wouldn't you want to? They're your other half, the perfect partner. However, that's just not scientifically accurate, not that soulmates were scientifically provable either, but there is a theory: when you see your match it excites something in your brain that triggers the cones in your eyes to work, allowing you to see color. After too long apart the brain stops sending the signal.

You were explaining this to May Parker, an older woman working at FEAST with you, following her like a pesky insect. She nodded politely, going about her business without an unkind look in your direction. She was really sweet, she wouldn't tell you when you were being annoying, but knowing how everyone else tended to react when you talked smart you quickly shut up.

"Sorry."

"No, dear, it's fine. I like to hear your thoughts. It sounds like you've got them bottled up inside just waiting to explode!" She laughed light-heartedly, unaware of how accurate that was. See, you weren't the most popular, you could never seem to be helpful and your shyness hindered you from asking how to be useful. You felt like a black sheep but May did her best to make you feel comfortable. She was the only reason you stayed to try to help at FEAST,

"But what's got you talking about soulmates?" May glanced back at you. Right, she lost her soulmate, be careful what you say.

"Well, um, I just think it's really fascinating. You don't....mind me talking about it, right?"

"Oh it's perfectly fine, just wonder why it peaked your interest is all."

"Yeah, heh, about that...."

"Peter! There you are!" May held out her arms for a hug from her nephew and you sighed.

"...and he's what I don't understand."

"Hey May, I can't stay long, I've got...errands." Peter noticed you. "Hey...." A flash of confusion crossed his face. It passed so fast if you were anyone else you wouldn't have seen it, but unfortunately for you, you weren't somebody else.

"Peter you remember (Y/N), right?"

"(Y/N), yes, hi." His awkwardness almost rivaled yours. You smiled. "I've gotta go, I'll see you later May!" He waved and left, vanishing as fast as he appeared.

"Oh, you were saying something earlier." May turned to you. "What was it?"

"Um." Did you want to continue that conversation? "Yeah. How did you know Ben was the one? But if you don't want to talk about him-"

"It's fine!" May laughed. "Honestly, dear, you're going to give yourself a heart attack from worrying too much."

"Well I don't want to make you uncomfortable-"

"(Y/N), it's perfectly alright. And to answer your question, I thought you knew. You see color for the first time. I can't see them anymore but I remember they were beautiful." There was a fond smile on her face as she spoke.

"But how'd you know it wasn't maybe the man behind him? Or next to him? You can see more than one person at a time."

"He was the only one I saw."

"Oh." You looked down. "But what if, hypothetically speaking, you looked into a crowd and you could see color. How would you know who your soulmate is?"
