Peter knew the risks of having a lover when he was a superhero. If villains learned who he really was, she would be in danger. That's why at his girlfriend's suggestion, he had gotten a fake girlfriend. Melinda (you can change this) had also known the danger and convinced him that he should pretend to date someone else so she wouldn't be in peril. Peter had mentioned that the other girl would be targeted instead and that could cause problems, but at Melinda's insistence, he had agreed.

Who was the fake girlfriend he chose? Well, he really didn't choose her, Melinda did, but it was her best friend. You. Melinda's reasoning was you were trained in martial arts and had some uncanny sense that told you when something bad was going to happen so you'd be just fine.

When the two approached you, you told them you would be honored to sign the contract. There really wasn't a contract for you to sign but you agreed to the terms: you were to be Peter's 'girlfriend' in public, small displays of affection were ok to make it look more realistic, and if asked you must say you're his girlfriend, and if anything bad is about to happen you must let Peter know.

Signing the verbal contract felt like signing some pact with them to protect their relationship. What you ended up doing wasn't protecting it, though.

The very next day was one of the most awkward in your life. Pretending to be your best friend's boyfriend's girlfriend was difficult, especially when she was in the same classroom. In science your teacher announced you'd all be starting a project on cells with a classmate of your choice. Peter went to match up with Melinda but she pointed him back to you. You were used to doing projects alone since it always went faster so having another student stuck with you made you unhappy.

The rest of the week wasn't much different. Melinda seemed to realize how much trouble you two were running into and requested you all go to her house to work on homework after school. She said it would help you two get more comfortable around each other. It worked, surprisingly, and by the next week it had become a part of your daily life.

During science class while you were working on the cell project, Peter draped an arm over your shoulder and leaned in to whisper in your ear. "I was thinking after school we could go to Baskin-Robbins and get some ice-cream."

You faced him. "I'd like that, but I thought Melinda was trying to stay away from dairy?" He grinned.

"She'll just have to watch us eat then."

"That's mean!" You whisper-shouted.

"Ms. (L/N), Mr. Parker," the teacher called, staring over his glasses at the 'display of affection'. You separated and got back to work on the project, avoiding the teacher's eyes, and once he went back to his book, you elbowed Peter in the ribs. A quiet 'ow' came from him and you sent him a small glare, mouthing 'meany'.

He just shook his head and muttered something like "I was just kidding." Later you did end up going to Baskin-Robbins because Melinda said a little dairy now and then was ok.

And that's how it went week after week. Being a girlfriend to the superhero of Queens became so easy you considered yourself a natural, and even Melinda said she couldn't even tell the relationship was fake anymore. You remember detecting a hint of uncertainty in her voice when she said it though, like she was unsure whether or not it was becoming a real relationship, so you made sure to tell her you thought the two of them made an adorable couple.

But recently you were feeling different. You'd get this weird feeling whenever Peter showed you the customary small bits of affection to prove the relationship was 'real'. At first you ignored it, but when you thought you felt butterflies in your stomach, you took a test online to see if you were right. The results weren't what you wanted. You were falling in love with your bestie's boyfriend.
