You took notes on the chemistry lesson the teacher was currently rattling on about, the notebook the notes were being put in filled with your neat handwriting. As you reached the bottom of the page, you picked the notebook up to flip it over, glancing at your friend Peter as it was up in the air. He was taking notes as well in his more sloppy writing, at least that's what you assumed. He could be doodling for all you knew.
You returned to writing, bent over the notebook so that your glasses slipped down your nose. You pushed them back up with your non-dominant hand. Other people called you a nerdーmostly because you did so well in schoolーand you guessed they weren't wrong, but you really prefered 'smarter than you'.
The teacher took a break from his speech to pick up a stack of papers from his desk. "I expect this worksheet to be filled out by tomorrow." He passed the papers out and when you got yours, you knew it was going to take less than 5 minutes. Taking a quick scan of the room, you saw the other students looking with disdain at the worksheet, well aware they didn't know how to answer any of the questions.
The bell rang and you stood from your seat, closing your notebook with the homework sheet inside and sticking that in your bag. You walked past the students filing out of the room over to Peter, who was slinging his bag over his shoulder. Before you reached him another girl approached him.
"Hey, Peter?" His head shot up in surprise.
"Uh, hi," he replied, baffled. The girl smiled, her perfect white teeth shining as her eyes seemed to pop because of the mascara she applied. Her chocolate brown hair was down her back in waves with little curls at the tips and she had the body you wished you had. She was popular, well liked, and perfect looking. You already didn't like her.
"I was wondering, if it's not too much trouble, if you could do my homework for me?" She smiled a little to appear innocent and held out the workload in her arms. Peter looked between her face and the homework, then took the offer.
"Sure," he said. Your jaw dropped.
"Thank you so much Pete. It's alright if I call you that, right?"
"Yeah." He seemed to be in a daze as he stared at her. She stood there for another second before going for the door. She paused in the doorway to call back her name, Jessica [you can change this if you'd like].
Once she was gone, you marched up to Peter. "What are you doing?" You demanded.
"Oh, (Y/N)!" He responded cheerily, smiling brightly.
"You're just going to do some random girl's homework because she smiled at you?" You cried. "What are you thinking?" You weren't mad, just baffled by his stupidity.
"I don't know." He shrugged and sighed. "No hot girls ever pay attention to me, let alone talk to me. I guess I'm just tired of being that dork Parker." You breathed a sigh. Sometimes it felt unfair how poorly you were treated by other students, but that didn't mean this would magically change everything.
"I know, it sucks, but she's using you!" You grabbed his shoulders. "Why would you do something for someone who looks down on you because you aren't popular?"
He pushed past you and headed for the door, leaving you behind, calling over his shoulder, "But what if they stop because I'm helping Jessica?"
You raced after him while shaking your head. "You're ok with being used?"
"I'm not, I'm helping her." And that was the end of that.
From that point onward, Jessica always went to him to do her homework. You were worried he was falling under her spell. Whenever you brought her up he refused to speakーknowing the conversation would lead to an argumentーand slowly things became tense between the two of you.
