You signed up for the position as mayor to help the lawless city you called home knowing full well what you were getting yourself into. Or so you thought. What you didn't expect was the invisible target on your back that appeared as soon as you chose to run for mayor. Suddenly everywhere you looked someone was eyeing you like a prize.
It didn't get any better when you won and started making reforms. The city's countless thieves and criminals seemed to unanimously agree that you needed to go, and it was only after your friend suggested it that you realized what you needed: a bodyguard.
So after some searching you were able to find a particularly interesting private-eye that would work wonderfully. You found him by stumbling across a crime scene on your way to the office where he was investigating. He was a dark figure with a trench coat, somebody you'd find leaning against the wall in an alley twirling a gun. He wore a mask with big white eyes so no one could read his expression and currently had his hand to his chin in thought. He noticed your gaze and walked over to tell you to stop distracting him.
"Sorry," you smiled apologetically, a far-off look in your eyes. "It's just...that might be me someday soon." You nodded towards the barely visible corpse.
"Is that so?" he asked, inviting you to elaborate. So you did. And, after telling him you were fairly certain Nazis would try to kill you too, he hopped aboard the Keep (Y/N) Alive train.
The next day you walked into the office with Noir, as he told you to call him. Your secretary looked up in shock, the glasses she had perched on her nose slipping a few centimeters. "Who's that?"
"He's my bodyguard," you told her with a small smirk of confidence.
"A-Are you sure you need one?" she asked, turning in her seat to watch you walk by.
"I'm sure I do." You closed the door to your office after Noir was inside. He plopped into the chair in front of your desk with his coat flying out dramatically. You rounded the desk and sat in your chair, going through the paperwork set there by your secretary.
"I don't trust her," Noir suddenly spoke. You looked up, a question in your eyes. "Your secretary. I'd be cautious around her."
"I'll keep that in mind." You grinned. "Wouldn't be the first time I've had to replace one."
"You're certainly optimistic despite your possibly impending demise," he said, a hint of interest in his tone. He mostly spoke in monotone so getting any semblance of emotion was a huge deal.
You shrugged. You knew there'd be one time, one slip-up, one mistake that got you killed eventually, but until then you would do what you could to change this city for the better. "I'm paying you to push my death date back further."
"With me around, you won't have to worry about dying at all." He added a spin of his revolver to accent his point.
The corner of your lips rose. "Glad to hear." You returned to the paperwork, not noticing him put the gun back on his belt and pull something mysterious out of his coat pocket. He eyed it for a while before rotating one of the sections.
You glanced up and paused. What on earth was that? You studied it for a brief period, your work completely forgotten, as Noir watched you. Giving up, you faced the masked man. "What is that?"
"It's called a Rubik's cube. Apparently it has colors I can't even see." Genuine childlike wonder filled his tone.
"A Roobox cube," you repeated, fascinated. And with colors you couldn't see? That was such a strange concept; the mere thought was confusing your brain. "Can I hold it?" you asked. He seemed taken aback by theーalbeit strangeーrequest, but held it out for you anyway. You took it gently, holding it close enough to your face for your nose to brush it.
