Laugh For Me

Has anyone ever told you something about someone you couldn't believe in a million years? Peter Parker could say yes to that question.

Everyone always told him that his friend, (Y/N), was one of the friendliest people ever. Of course, Peter would agree she was easy to get along with, but maybe not the friendliest person in the school. More importantly, they said she was always smiling and laughing. Peter had hardly seen the girl grin, let alone laugh. There was no way they were talking about the reserved, stoic girl that never seemed remotely excited about anything.

Peter sat with his head in his hands, watching the girl a few seats in front of him work on the assignment the teacher passed out 10 minutes ago. Peter had finished it 5 minutes previous and had taken to watching (Y/N), trying to figure out why everyone was convinced she was the most bubbly person they'd ever met.

But for the life of him, he couldn't figure it out.

The bell rang and (Y/N) lifted her head up from her work, sighing at the notion of having homework that night. She scooped up her books and papers and headed out the door, not knowing a certain brown-haired boy was trailing after her. Stopping at her locker, she put in the combination and tugged on the door. It didn't open. She put the combination in again and tried to open it once more, but it didn't work.

(Y/N) smashed her head into the locker, groaning. I hate this locker, she thought with a sour expression appearing on her face. Maybe she should just bring her backpack with her to her classes.

"Need some help?" Peter asked, leaning against the locker next to hers casually.

"Be my guest," she replied, stepping away so he could take her place. He put in the combo and opened it first try.

"Thanks." He swore he saw a tiny smile form on her face but then she was putting her stuff in her locker. The two shared the next periodーwhich was lunchーso Peter decided to wait for her so they could walk together. Once her locker was shut, they walked side by side to the lunchroom a few hallways down.

They both got in line for lunch, and after they received their food, they split up to sit with their respective friend groups. As Peter sat with his friend/s, he kept his eyes on (Y/N). The other girls she was sitting with were talking animatedly about something or other, and then one made a remark that had the other girls busting up laughing.

Peter's eyes widened at the sight of (Y/N) laughing louder than all the other girls. She nearly fell out of her seat but the girl next to her grabbed her arm. Her eyes shone from the water filling them, and she quickly wiped them to avoid the tears of joy leaving her eyes. She smiled brightly for a few minutes afterwards as the girl telling the story continued.

Peter looked down at the food on his trayーor rather, through it. He believed them now, those that said (Y/N) was a happy person, but why had he never heard her laugh? Why was she so deprived of emotion when she was around him? Is it possible she...didn't....like him?

As Peter was going to dump his tray of uneaten food some time later, he heard the bell ring. He didn't have any of the rest of his classes with (Y/N), but he needed to talk to her. So before she left to her locker, he stopped her.

"Hey, do you wanna come over to my house after school to work on homework?" He tilted his head. She nodded with a solemn expression.

"I could use some help. I'll see you later," she waved and left. Peter spun on his heel to head to class, wondering what she'd say when he asked her about her strange behavior around him.

"You ready?" Peter ran up to (Y/N), who was waiting under a tree with her back to the trunk, arms folded and staring off into the distance.

"I suppose," she answered, pushing off the tree and heading towards the train station. He followed after her, having to nearly run to keep up with her fast pace.

"Do you hate me?" He asked, making her freeze. She turned to him with a panicked expression and shook her head.

"No, never, why...why would you ask that?" She suddenly seemed jittery, like she just learned she had to spend a night in a haunted house.

"You never look too happy to be around me."

"I am, I just..." She shook her head. "We're gonna miss the train." The two started running for the train station, trying to ignore how awkward it had gotten between them.

It felt like the awkwardness vanished when they finally stepped into the house. Aunt May was standing in the kitchen cooking something in a pot when she heard the door open and turned to see her nephew and (Y/N) come in.

"Oh, I wasn't aware we were having a guest over," she said, sending Peter a look.

"Sorry, I forgot to tell you," Peter mumbled. "We're just going to work on homework."

"I won't be staying for supper, Aunt May," (Y/N) informed her.

"Tell me if you change your mind," May smiled then returned her attention to the food in the pot. Peter stood silent for a second before setting his stuff on the table and taking out his finished homework.

"Shall we get started?" He asked.

"I don't understand how you can get it all done during class," (Y/N) huffed, pulling the next sheet of paper towards herself to copy off of. Peter shrugged, smiling, as he leaned back in his chair.

"So tell me," he said. "What were you laughing about during lunch?" She stopped. "One of your friends said something and you about fell out of your seat you were laughing so hard." Aunt May looked up from the pot, surprised to hear (Y/N) actually laughed.

"I don't know what you're talking about," she replied coldly, going back to writing down answers.

"I saw you laughing, (Y/N)," Peter said, eyes narrowing.

"And so what if I did?" She snapped, glaring at him.

"You hardly even smile around me. Why is that?" She looked away, keeping her mouth sealed shut. "Do you not like me?"

"I like you."

"Then why-"

"No, you don't understand!" She glared at him. "I like you, like, like-like you. And I have a really obnoxious laugh so I don't want you to hear it. It's....embarrassing. I just thought it'd be easier to prevent laughing if I act unemotional around you." She sighed and folded her arms with slowly reddening cheeks, not able to meet his gaze. "Satisfied?"

May looked between the two, waiting for Peter to tell her he liked her too, but when the boy stayed silent, she said it for him. "He likes you too!" She shouted, then quickly busied herself with the food in the pot as Peter turned to scowl at her. (Y/N) laughed quietly, putting her hand over her mouth to stifle it.

Peter spun around, eyes wide. "You laughed!" He pointed at her. She nodded, smiling behind her hand. He swiveled in his chair a bit too fast as he turned to see if Aunt May heard and ended up on the floor.

(Y/N) burst out laughing and May joined in as Peter sat with a frown on the floor. But when he saw (Y/N) laughing openly, the frown flipped upside down. He promised something in that moment: to always make her smile and laugh like she were right now.

And even to this day, with a wedding ring on both their fingers and a couple kids to care for, he has made good on that promise.
