AU: you have a tattoo of your soulmate's name on your arm (first name only)
When your crush's name is literally written in ink on your arm, you shouldn't be this scared to approach him. You'd known him for a while, too shy to go up and talk to him, but that didn't stop you from slowly working up the courage.
It sounded easy in theory: just walk over and tell him he's your soulmate. But it wasn't that easy. What if it wasn't him? You had a cousin who thought this guy was her soulmate but he wasn't. It made you shiver just thinking about it. What if that happened to you?
"That won't happen," your mother said when you told her your situation. "You already like him because he's your soulmate." Your parents met in high school and had known immediately they were meant to be together forever. They'd been happily married the next day (at least that's what they liked to say; your aunt told you it took a couple years for the wedding to happen). You wanted a perfect story just like that, crafted as if by an author with a perfect happily ever after ending.
But you simply couldn't get over your fear! It was actually beginning to annoy you, but unable to change your personality on a whim, you had to suffer until your confidence was boosted enough to take a leap of faith. The day couldn't seem to come fast enough, but when it was finally there, you wasted no time.
You found him in the hallway struggling to get his supplies out of his locker. Seeing nobody else offering to help or close enough to hear you two, you walked over. "H-Hi Peter," you said, cringing inwardly at your screw up. He glanced at you, momentary confusion in his eyes before a flash of recognition replaced it.
"Hi (Y/N)."
"You need some help?" your voice was feeble, barely sounding above a whisper, but he still heard it.
"I think I've got it, thanks." He finally yanked a book out, and, giving a sigh of relief, snapped the locker shut. "I'll see you around." Unsure if you'd see him again soon and terrified you'd lose your confidence, you grabbed his arm.
"Sorry!" You released him, scared you squeezed too hard. He rose an eyebrow. Your face began burning and your confidence weigned but you refused to let the opportunity pass. "Um, I'm pretty sure, I mean, I don't know but maybe, I think I might, possibly..." You couldn't seem to stop babbling, and seeing him start to inch backwards in an effort to not be late to class, you became desperate. You stuck out your arm and pulled up your sleeve to show him your tattoo.
He squinted at the tattoo then his eyes grew wide. He struggled to speak for a second then swallowed thickly. "I'm sorry, (Y/N), but you're not my soulmate." The momentary rewarding feeling rushing through you at finally telling him was destroyed by the sudden regret pooling in your stomach. He showed you his arm, which had (MJ/Gwen/Michelle)'s name on it. You should've known; you'd seen them hanging out more than just friends would.
Your face burned as you backed up, hugging your stuff to your chest and avoiding his eyes. "Sorry, I- uh, just thought, I'm sorry, I won't- right." You missed the sympathy in his eyes as he took a step towards you.
"Hey, it's fine. Don't worry about it, it happens to a lot of people." He grimaced. "I think." You would give your soul to be anywhere but here. "I'll see you later (Y/N)!"
Then he was gone and you were standing in the empty hallway desperately trying to get a handle on your emotions. Your mom was wrong.
A/N: Somebody stop me! I read spiderneds's book of oneshots and the majority of them are sad, so now I'm writing sad ones because of it. (Highly recommend reading it tho, it's amazingly well written!)
Didn't think that one was sad? You right. The next one will be sadder!
