"Shh! Here she comes!" Ned hit Peter's arm and both boys shut up as you sat down across from them at the lunch table. You looked between them, eyes narrowed.
"What'd I walk in on?"
"Nothing!" Peter said quickly, a not at all suspicious look on his face. "How's your day going (Y/N)?"
"Fine." You rose an eyebrow but brushed it off. "I've got another idea for the science fair."
"Better than a volcano?" Ned leaned closer, his jaw dropped. You nodded.
"But I can't tell you because I'm keeping it for myself."
Ned pouted. "That's cruel."
"Fine," you relented, too excited to not tell them. "I got a really smart guy's help on it, but it's basically some robotic arms that can help do stuff for you."
"Smart guy?"
"My dad knows him, college buddy or something. They split after my dad pursued a different line of work. He's supposed to be a scientist but I've never heard of him." You shrugged. "But I know I'm going to win this year! Unless somebody's mom judges again." You shot a look over at a neighboring table where a kid named Tim sat.
"I heard Tim wasn't even going to enter this year," Ned said.
"Good. Can't cheat then." You turned back to the boys. "I'll see you after school right?"
"Yeah," Peter said in a 'duh' tone.
"See you two later." You sent a smile their way then left. Ned smacked Peter's shoulder, earning a sour look from the recipient.
"If you don't tell her I will!"
"No, Ned, please don't."
"Everyone knows you like her, everyone."
"Yeah but she doesn't!"
"You gotta tell her sometime." Ned picked up his tray. "Or someone else will beat you to it."
"Where's Peter?" you asked, stopping in front of a nervous Ned.
"He said he had to do something," was his speedy response. You nodded slowly.
"So we'll just meet him at his apartment?"
"Yep."
"Alright." You led the way out of the school. You had been getting this nagging feeling the boys were hiding something from you, but what would they want to keep secret from you? You told each other everything.
You had to have been studying for half an hour by the time Peter showed up. He was out of breath, holding a frozen vegetable bag against his cheek, and not prepared to come face to face with you upon opening his bedroom door.
"Uh, (Y/N)...." His mind blanked.
"Did, um, Flash punch you again?" Ned asked.
"Yes, yeah, that's what happened." He pointed at Ned and nodded. You tsked and pulled the veggies from his face.
"Ooo, that looks painful." You winced. The bruise was purple and black and covered most of his cheek. "I can't believe Flash would do that. He's such a jerk."
"I'm fine." He pressed the veggies back against the sore spot.
"Have you even seen that thing? You look like a spoiled grape.." You shook your head sympathetically. You backed up a step to give him room and he sat down next to Ned. Something out of the corner of your eye caught your attention and you turned to glance out the window. You peered out the open window and glanced around, unable to spot whatever it was.
