Glaring at the sun, you tried your best to walk in the shadows. It wasn't easy but an occasional lamppost offered enough protection to make you feel better for a brief moment. You were on your way to school so the sun wasn't in its prime yet, but that didn't stop the stinging sensation across your exposed skin.

You were a vampire. And before you say it, no, sunlight doesn't roast them alive. Most of that stuff they claim kills a vampire is garbage: garlic just tastes and smells terrible, the sun stings, and a silver bullet or impaling you will kill you just like any other human. You were essentially a normal human, save for the whole needing blood to survive thing. You could eat food too, but it wasn't necessary, so you only ate dessert (vampires are known to have a sweet tooth).

Besides your mother you didn't know many vampires, but that might be because your kind had gotten skilled at blending in with the humans. Speaking of, you had finally made it to school. Cursing your fast walking speed, you headed inside to see your friend (F/N) waiting for you at your locker. She was the only vampire you knew of in the school (besides yourself) so naturally you hung out.

"Hey," she called, pushing off your locker to approach you. You greeted her and shoved your backpack into your locker, grabbing out your necessary supplies. "Did you pick out your next meal?"

"Shh," you hissed, glaring at her out of the corner of your eye.

"I was thinking him." She pointed at a jock bumping chests with his buddies. You sized him up and shrugged.

"Shouldn't you choose someone noone notices?"

"It makes it more thrilling." She grinned, her fangs poking out.

"Stop salivating, someone's gonna see." You slammed your locker and bumped her with your shoulder. She wiped her mouth as her fangs retracted.

"If you bring attention to us I'll spread garlic all over your room."

She nearly gagged. "I'm not going to." You went silent as you surveyed potential food options, and after a moment, you pointed.

"Him." She followed your finger and smirked.

"He's kinda cute."

"I've been watching him for a while. His only friends are a chubby asian kid and a black girl that reads constantly. To be honest I'm not even sure if he considers her a friend."

"A nobody."

You nodded. "Exactly."

"You don't think he'll be suspicious you're talking to him? Sounds like he doesn't get any action from girls."

"I'll come up with an excuse. Now come on, I don't wanna be late for class." You pushed her towards your first class of the day.

You watched his back the entire math period. You lived for a far longer time than humans so it really didn't matter if you had to take the class again. His name was Peter, clearly a nerd based off how much he paid attention in class and silent when his friend wasn't next to him. It had been nearly a week since your last meal and staring at his exposed shoulder wasn't helping your cravings.

You zoned back in when the teacher announced the homework and you could sense your classmates internally groan. It was as good an excuse as any, you supposed, and took the worksheet handed out. You walked up to Peter as the bell rang and put a hand on his shoulder. He spun around quickly, making you take a step back.

"Whoa, hey, it's just me." The tense of his shoulders didn't ease. Your brows furrowed. "You good?"

"Yeah yeah what's up?"
