AU: Any injury you sustain your soulmate gets too (and vice versa), whether it's a papercut or a gunshot wound. If your soulmate dies, you die too. However, that also means you can save each other. Example: Person A gets a heart attack, meaning Person B does too. Person B is rushed to the hospital, where they're successfully saved, meaning Person A lives too.
Warning: Far From Home spoiler included, and some depression/suicide stuff is mentioned
For the majority of your life, you and your soulmate stayed injury free. That meant it was hard to find him, but your mother was beyond relieved. See, she was overprotective and worried about you constantly, and as annoying as that was, you couldn't fault her for it. Her soulmate used to cause her pain constantly and she didn't want for you to experience that.
But recently you sustained injury after injury. It ranged from broken noses to scrapes and bruises to broken ribs. Your mother freaked out but she couldn't stop the pain, which in turn made the hospital a common place to visit. She did everything she could to make the injuries go away as fast as they could, but you had a feeling that meant your soulmate could go get beat up again faster.
Slowly you started to resent him. What happened? Why was he suddenly getting beat up all the time? Why did he have to be your soulmate? There was no way you could love someone who knowingly did this to himself and you.
The last straw came one day when you were headed to the grocery store and suddenly your entire body exploded with pain. You screamed and collapsed, the pain blurring your vision and thoughts. It felt like you got hit by a train. Thankfully some kind strangers were around to call for an ambulance and help you as much as they could until the paramedics arrived.
"Was it your soulmate?" one lady asked, holding your hand as you squeezed the life out of it. Your eyebrows furrowed in a scowl and she sighed, nodding. You cursed him as you squirmed on the ground. It hurt. It hurt so bad. "Try not to move," she said, gently putting her hands on your shoulders to push you back onto the ground. You glared at her. She wasn't the one in pain. She wasn't the one with a dumbass soulmate who liked to nearly kill himself for fun.
Then you were at the hospital, hooked up to more machines than you could count and wrapped in bandages that restricted any and all movement. You were bedridden for a week. You cursed him every day. You were sure you saved his life but you didn't want to, and thinking back on it, you would've died just to kill him too you despised him so much. The entire soulmate thing was BS. You could find someone else to make you happy cuz that guy surely wouldn't.
You left the hospital with a limp and your body ached but at least you weren't stuck in that uncomfortable bed anymore. The doctors were surprised you recovered as fast as you did; you figured your soulmate must have a fast healing ability after nearly killing himself so much. Now with most of your summer gone and your mother fussing over you constantly, you were angrier than ever. He was the entire reason your mother was so annoying and you were a cripple now.
You sat on the rooftop of your apartment, legs swinging over a 5 story drop to the pavement below. As much as you entertained the idea of jumping just to get back at your soulmate, you knew you'd never do it. It was amazing how different you were now as opposed to a year ago, and all of it was due to your soulmate. You were bitter, had a hatred rivaled by none for this boy you were supposed to love unconditionally, and there was nothing you could do about your bullcrap of a situation. The anger was just a cover for the depression you seemed to be falling into. You just felt hopeless, especially with no way to find your soulmate to make him stop.
"Hey." The voice shocked you and you nearly fell off the roof. You put a hand to your racing heart and turned to glare at the person. You stopped short as you saw the hero standing behind you.
