You know those late night talks where things come out that were probably better left unspoken? You and your older brother had one of those, and that deep dark secret that should've stayed buried was your crush on his best and only friend, Peter. In late talks you feel like everything is alright in the world, you can tell each other anything and the other won't hold it against you, but that false sense of security is what led to the events that brought about something you didn't intend.

You were sitting at the lunch table with Ned and Peter, having nowhere else to sit since you had a lack of friends. Michelle was strangely missing from her usual spot at the adjoining table. You were slowly eating the slop on your tray while the boys talked about whatever geeky stuff they did.

You weren't really paying attention to what they were saying as much as the boy you were crushing on. He was a cinnamon roll with big brown doe eyes and slightly ruffled brown hair that was combed to the side. When he smiled his entire face lit up and whenever you saw it you couldn't help but smile too. He always had this look on his face when he was talking about something nerdy, like he was right now with Ned; you couldn't seem to tear your eyes away.

Peter looked over at you and you flinched, thinking you'd been caught staring. "You could come, too," he offered. You tilted your head.

"What?"

"Ned was gonna come over this weekend, you can come if you want."

"Oh." You didn't have to thinkーyour answer was yesーbut you needed to seem nonchalant so after a pause you shrugged and said "Sure." Peter smiledーmaking you internally meltーbefore he turned back to Ned. Your imagination went soaring with possibilities but reality tried to interfere, reminding you he didn't look at you most days so those fantasies you were coming up with wouldn't happen in a million years.

The problem with having a crush on someone was controlling your hormones. There really wasn't a way to control them, per say, but a way to at least attempt to stop them from influencing too much. A brief look your way or a tiny smile in your direction had your heart racing like he just asked you on a date. They were all excuses to prove he liked you, though you knew deep down it wasn't true, the hormones along with your heart convinced your brain it was evidence enough.

When the weekend finally rolled around you were low-key ecstatic. Ned was trying to decide what lego set they should build together while you were choosing the perfect outfit to impress Peter. It couldn't be too fancy or too casual, but it couldn't call attention to itself or it would look like you're craving attention. Everything you thought was perfect, after closer examination, screamed attention, too fashionable, or not good enough.

This was too difficult, so you closed your eyes and pointed in a random direction, opening your eyes to find your finger was leading to a cute sundress with pastel yellow fabric. It seemed a little girl-ish and not for someone of your age, but it was nearly time for you and Ned to head over so you didn't have much of a choice. You threw it on and grabbed your phone just as Ned yelled that it was time to go.

Arriving at Peter's doorstep, you could barely keep still. This was your first time at his apartment and you were probably a bit too excited. Ned observed your enthusiastic state and grinned, happy you were looking forward to building the Star Destroyer with them.

Peter's Aunt May opened the door with a smile and invited the two of you in. You greeted her with enthusiasm and the both of you got talking while Ned went to find Peter. May was really cool, an aunt you wish you could grow up to be, and counted Peter lucky to have her. But as great of a person as she was, you were really only here to see Peter.

After excusing yourself, you headed off to the room you were pretty sure Ned went in. Ned and Peter were on the floor of Peter's messy room, the small space they were occupying being the only area not covered by dirty clothes, textbooks, or scraps of paper. All of the lego pieces were scattered around in between them, ranging in size and color (though most were black or gray).

You made your way through the mess and kneeled down beside them. Ned was holding the instructions and telling Peter what to do. He was struggling sifting through all the pieces so you joined his efforts, pulling out the desired piece. Peter sent you a smile and took the piece from you. His hand grazed yours.

Ned showed you the picture for the next step and told Peter what pieces to find. You picked up the beginning of the ship and took the legos from Peter to add to the slowly forming creation. This went on for a while, the only conversing going on being about the Destroyer, but it steadily turned into a conversation. The two nerds were talking about classes they had while you, being a freshman, couldn't contribute to the conversation since you weren't in those classes.

They started going off on a rant about one teacher that was awful, completely abandoning the project they initially set out to do, so you had to do it yourself. However you pushed one piece onto another a bit too hard, causing the ship to break in half. You let out a cry of surprise causing both boys to look over at you.

"S-Sorry!" You said, fumbling to push the pieces back together. With Peter's eyes on you you felt more nervous and just couldn't seem to do it.

"Here." Peter took it from you and connected the halves in one try. He held it up for you to take and you gingerly grabbed it, unaware of the red color decorating your face. "You okay?" He asked. Were you warm? He could bring a fan in here if it felt too stuffy.

"She's blushing," Ned whispered, making your face turn a shade or two darker. Peter made an 'o' face.

"It's alright, that happens to me sometimes, too." Peter gestured to the Destroyer and Ned shook his head.

"No, it's because she likes you." Dead. Silence. Your face couldn't possibly get any redder than it was now; you wanted to jump out the window you were so embarrassed. Ned had a hand over his mouth, remembering after he said it that it was supposed to be a secret. Peter was mostly confused.

"You like me?" He asked, his eyebrows furrowed as he waited for your confirmation.

"I've...gotta....go." You set the Destroyer down and ran out the door, past May who was making lunch, and out the door and down the hall. You should've known Ned couldn't keep a secret, living with him for 14 years should've told you that, but yet you trusted him with the biggest secret you had. You rapped on your skull with your knuckles as a way to beat yourself up. Well it was nice while it lasted but Peter definitely wouldn't want to see you anymore, you might as well head home.

The door leading to Peter's apartment opened and Peter walked out, looking up and down the length of the hallway before his eyes landed on you. He jogged towards you and you panicked, torn between facing him or running for the stairs. But he got to you before you could make the choice so you were forced to confront him.

"Um, sorry about back there, I was just shocked." He rubbed the back of his neck and flashed an adorably awkward smile. "I, uh, don't know how to tell you this, but I don't....really....." You knew what he was trying to say and your head drooped.

"It's fine." It wasn't.

"But we can still be friends!" Peter added quickly. "We can pretend this never happened if you want." That sounded great. A fresh start, you could put it all behind you and move on. You nodded and he grinned. "Great. Now c'mon, we've got a Star Destroyer to finish." He held out his hand to you, and though surprised, you took it and both of you returned to his apartment.

Maybe he didn't love you now but that didn't mean he never would.
