AU: When you turn 18 the first words your soulmate says to you appear on your arm (which only you can see). So even if you've met before it's the first words they say to you after you're 18.

Also, it's kinda ironic the first oneshot of 2020 is about first words, dontcha think?
Happy New Years everyone!

It was finally the day. You were legally an adult in your last year of high school, and now you could meet your soulmate. Your mind wandered to all the guys you had your eye on for the past month. Could it be any of them? Or had you not met him yet? Maybe he was someone famous, that'd be cool.

The second you woke up your eyes were on your forearm. Thick black letters were scratched across your arm as if they'd been tattooed there while you slept. You had to've read them 50 times, trying to decipher with just that simple sentence who it was. I guess we're partners. Your thoughts ran wild; maybe it's in response to what you say, and he's saying you're his soulmate. It sounded nonchalant, so maybe that meant it was someone you already knew and they were relieved it was you (and not some crackhead in an alley).

"Oh I hope it's Trevor," you whispered, crossing your fingers. Trevor was 6'4" and built like a football player on steroids (but none of his muscles could be attributed to drugs), not to mention he had a heart of gold. You sighed just thinking about him. You hopped out of bed and got ready for school.

Once there you met your friends before class where they bombarded you with "happy birthday"s and "what does it say"? None of them had turned 18 yet and were impatient to get their own soulmate tattoo, but instead of answering you told them they had to wait until lunch. This was met with groans of frustration and complaints but in the end they couldn't do anything about it. So you went to class with a cocky grin and a bounce in your step.

It was unlikely you'd meet him today but that didn't stop you from trying to make it happen. You made it a point to talk with all of the boys you had your eye on, but none of them said the magic words. Then you got to Chemistry, your only class with Trevor. You knew somewhere deep down that he was your soulmate, so you made sure your makeup was on point and nothing was stuck in your teeth before taking a step towards him.

"Sit down." The chem teacher picked that moment to come in, slamming the door behind him. You plopped back into your seat, huffing. He stared intensely at the students for a few moments, taking his time on each before clapping his hands. "Project. Due Friday. It's on an element of your choice. You must know it inside and out, what makes it up, what makes it explode. You choose the presentation style, and you are getting points on creativity!" He set a stack of papers on the front table. "One sheet per group, which I have chosen." As he called names you crossed your fingers you got paired with Trevor. ".....(Y/N) and Peter..." You groaned.

Then he let everyone get to work. You stayed slumped in your seat, disappointed as you watched Trevor from across the room. Did you have time to talk to him before class ended?

Someone cleared their throat next to you and you looked up. Some scrawny kid, about 5'8", probably had a 'great personality'. You rose an eyebrow. He cleared his throat again and held up the paper with the project instructions. "I guess we're partners." No. Nonononono. Your soulmate was this kid?!

"You can't be serious," you gaped. He blinked.

"What?"

"You, of all people. Some nobody." Your head hit the desk. "This has to be some kind of mix-up. My real soulmate also says that, you probably just happened to say the exact same thing."
