You were practically staring Peter down as he rambled about a girl he had taken a sudden interest in. You had your arms propped up on the diner counter as your official manager-given hat lay askew on your head. The shift was done in 5 minutes anyways so there was no point fixing it, despite how 'unkempt' your manager claimed it looked.
"I told her I competed in Decathlon and won, she seemed impressed with me." The boy smiled and looked to you for approval. You shook your head.
"But you didn't tell her you didn't actually participate cuz you were busy climbing walls?" Peter looked around frantically, as if that vague of a hint at his superpower side job was in jeopardy because of it.
"Well, no..." You shook your head again, your lips curving up faintly.
"I know you're trying to impress her but you're giving her a false representation of yourself." He rose a finger to interject but you continued. "You told her you haven't touched Legos in years when I distinctly remember you building the...whatever it was called with Ned."
"So?"
"Honey, you don't want her to think you're lying to her. It would be better if you dated someone who already knew you."
"I guess," he mumbled, slumping in the barstool. You sighed, looking down at the scratched countertop. You had liked him for who knows how long and he was still just as oblivious. But then you'd already accepted it would only ever be friendship between you two.
You looked up and patted his hand. "You'll find someone. Knowing you she's probably standing right in front of you and you haven't noticed her yet." You winked. He offered a smile and squeezed your hand.
"Thanks (Y/N)."
"'Course hun."
"(Y/N)!" The smile on your face was gone as soon as it appeared.
"Sup?" You faced your manager.
"Your hat!" She pointed to your head with disgust.
"I'm clocking out." You brushed her off, not giving mind to her attitude. There was only one person you genuinely gave a crap about, and it sure as heck wasn't her.
You took intermittent sips from your milkshake as you listened to Peter ramble on the walk home. He really liked this girl in his class, tho he also didn't know much about her. The jealousy that came with hearing him talk about other girls had long since faded into a dull ache. You would never be his, you had accepted that. But then why did it still hurt?
"I was thinking I'd ask her out tomorrow." His ears had turned red and he was avoiding looking at you. You snickered.
"Where to? And aren't you a little busy?"
"I can take an hour to go on a date," he protested. "And I was going to ask you."
"I'm sorry, ask me?" For the briefest of moments, your mind tricked you into thinking he meant he was going to ask you out.
"Yeah, like where to go. For the date." He kicked a pebble. "All my ideas are lame."
"Where were you thinking?" The floor must've really piqued his interest cuz he really didn't want to look at you.
"The arcade?" he said slowly, hesitantly peeking up at you.
"That's a great idea."
"No it's not! It's nerdy and uncool."
"Oh honey." You shook your head. "Remember when I said you want to be comfortable around her? If you can't be yourself-"
"Yeah I know," he huffed. "I'm just overthinking this. I'll just...ask her to a nice restaurant."
