Stepping into Tony Stark's shoes wasn't what Peter had in mind, but after all that had happened he didn't have much of a choice. The rest of the (remaining) Avengers expected him to act more mature and take on a greater role in the team. What he didn't expect was having to take care of a potential new recruit.
She went by the alias Mirage, and she could make decoys/holograms of herself. It didn't sound like that great of a superpower but to (Y/N) it was the wickedest, awesomest, coolest thing ever. She was so full of herself she created decoys just to talk to herself, and there was nothing more annoying than hearing her compliment herself all night.
"Shh," Peter grumbled, glaring over his shoulder at the girl and her decoy. They both gasped dramatically and she faced the hologram.
"Can you believe him?"
"Honestly." The decoy rolled its eyes.
"We're supposed to be on a stealth mission," he whispered.
"Yeah, and we're stealthing, we're fine."
"Is stealthing a word?" the decoy asked. She shrugged then snapped her fingers, making the hologram disappear.
"Fine, since you're so pushy." She crouched down next to him, peeking past the rooftop edge at the ground below. She swallowed nervously and moved back. "Why do we have to be so high up?"
"It gives us a vantage point."
"So in other words: we have the high ground." She grinned. He nodded. "Cool." She sat silent for a minute before growing bored and poking his shoulder. "Hey Mr. Spider, when do I get to know your secret identity?" Was he this annoying back when Tony recruited him?
"Not for a long time."
"But I told you mine," she whined. It was the first thing she told him.
"Can you shut up?" It came out snippy but he was really tired of her. She listened, for once, as he asked Karen for a scan of the building. There were only 5 plus the hostage, this shouldn't be too hard. He glanced at the girl next to him, who was tracing something in the air and sighing dramatically. Easy as long as she didn't screw it up, he revised.
After explaining the plan, he sent her around back and dropped in through the roof. He knocked out 2 of the guards then snuck down to a lower level. He spotted (Y/N) trying to take down a guard that was shaking her like a rag doll. Peter sighed and shot a web at the guard, rendering him blind. (Y/N) used the opportunity to subdue him and send Peter a smile and a thumbs up. He just shook his head and continued on to find 2 more beside the hostage.
He was thinking of a plan when (Y/N) appeared across the room and sent out two decoys to attack the guards at the same time. As the men dropped she put a hand on her hip and snapped, making the decoys disappear.
"How was that?" she asked, smiling proudly.
"Reckless." Her expression fell. "But good job." She perked back up.
"Yes!"
"Now let's get-" He stopped. That was a dummy, not a hostage. "What?" But Karen had picked up 6 heat signatures, where did the hostage go? A startled noise made him turn to see a gun at the back of (Y/N)'s head and a group of armed men right behind her. Where was his Peter tingle when he needed it?
"If you're looking for Dr. Stein I'm afraid you just missed him, he was moved to another facility a few minutes ago." The leader, a man in a red hat and pistol glued to (Y/N)'s skull stepped forward. (Y/N) looked between the gun and him, weighing her chances.
"No." She looked at Peter.
"No?" the man asked, confused.
"Don't." He sent her a pointed look.
"Shoot her? I will, but after I get the information I need."
"We won't tell you anything," (Y/N) grumbled, glaring at him. He tilted the gun and shot her leg. She let out a scream and fell to her knees, clutching her thigh as blood seeped through her fingers.
"You've got 3 more limbs so I suggest cooperating," the man said blankly. Peter looked between (Y/N) and the man. Could he grab her and get out of here? Not likely with the firing squad behind red hat.
"Look, I don't really know her, and she doesn't know anything. You let her go and, since I value my life, I'll tell you everything you want to know."
"I don't need her?" The man rose an eyebrow.
"No." Just as the man aimed the gun at her head, she sent out five decoys. He shot a decoy and it disintegrated as the other four were shot down by the squad behind him. But (Y/N) was gone. Peter took off just as red hat noticed his bargaining chip was gone. They shot at him but he was already swinging into the night.
They met at the designated regroup rooftop. She was out of breath when she arrived (she told him she hated running) and had to take a minute just to talk. Her leg was seeping blood but she had tied a piece of cloth around it to slow it down. The bullet had missed her femoral artery by a long shot but that didn't stop her complaining under her breath.
"You were trying to kill me!" she shouted, pointing at him.
"I didn't know he was just going to shoot you!" he protested.
"'I don't know her, I don't care about her, just shoot her so I don't have to listen to her jabber on and on all night'."
"I was trying to get you out of there. I didn't think he'd want to keep you around if you weren't useful to him."
"I took psychology, ok, I know when someone's lying. You weren't." Her eyes were glistening.
"Sure you get annoying sometimes, but that doesn't mean I hate you!"
"I know I'm annoying, but I can't help it. I've never met anyone that wanted me around so I make mes to talk to. I'm just really....lonely." Neither of them seemed to know what to say after that. "Um, well, now that I've made things awkward, I should probably get to a hospital." She started to scoot towards the fire escape with her hand pressed over the wound. When he didn't say anything, she hung her head and shuffled off. Maybe she wasn't cut out to be a hero; she had no doubt he'd agree on that. And then she had to go and spill her sad life story to him after messing up and getting shot and make things uncomfortable between them and- ugh. She ran a hand through her hair.
"Help!" The shout startled her. She shook her head, knowing if she tried to help she'd just screw it up, plus she thought she saw spots at the edge of her vision. Besides, Spider-man could handle it. She glanced back at the rooftop but he wasn't there. "Help!" The cry became more frantic. She looked from the direction of the noise to her shoes.
"Ugh, fine." She limped towards the noise.
When she slid into the alley, a thug was beating up a kid. She sent out a decoy as a distraction then crept up behind him. The thug swung at the hologram and went right through it. As he was baffled, she threw a knockout punch and he fell like a box of rocks.
"I actually did it," she murmured, her eyes going wide. "Oh, right, are you okay kid?" She turned to the boy.
"I'm your age," he mumbled. He was right, she realized, and he was also really cute. "And yeah, thanks. If you didn't show up I..." He shivered, grabbing his backpack straps. "I'm Peter." He held out his hand. She accepted the handshake.
"Mirage, but my real name's (Y-"
"Shouldn't you be keeping that secret?" he asked.
"Oh, right." Her face flushed.
"Well I better get going, and you should probably do something about your leg, but you're a pretty awesome hero Mirage!" He waved and headed out of the alleyway. He thought she was a good hero. She put her hands to her cheeks, feeling the warmth through her gloves. Maybe she could still become a superhero. With a smile on her face, she shambled off to the nearest hospital.
A/N: I must've been really out of it because when I initially wrote it I completely forgot y/n got shot, so in editing I added a few more sentences but kept the plot mostly the same. So I guess you're just really cool? Despite being shot? idk
