(F/N) - fake name

It's amazing how looking at a lunchroom you can tell exactly what the cliques are and who's in them. Jocks were usually horsing around and each had several trays to eat from, justified by being in football and needing all those extra calories. The popular girls were spreading gossip or in the bathroom doing their makeup. The preps were busy studying or talking about the latest test they 'failed', knowing full well they aced it like always. Then there were the loners, or outcasts, or basketcases, always sitting by themselves and looking as out of place as pink lipstick on a goth.

At this school, Midtown Tech, the weirdos were a chubby asian kid, an awkward white boy, and a sarcastic black girl. It was quite an odd sight seeing them all together, but you could tell their friendship was strong. Maybe they'd ignore you if you sat down at the table next to theirs.

As soon as your tray touched the table, they were all looking at you. You met their gazes as you sat down. When nobody spoke, you decided to. "Am I not allowed to sit here?" You could tell the girl didn't like how you said it, and you agreed it sounded snarky. Internally you felt bad about it but externally kept a neutral expression.

"You're fine," the big kid said, smiling. "I haven't seen you before. Are you new here?"

"Yes." You turned to your food and started eating to shut down the conversation but he didn't seem to realize you didn't want to talk.

"Where'd you come here from?" He slid over so he sat across from you. You stopped chewing and stared at him. His smile drooped. You felt a pang in your heart.

"Far away. It was a small town, you wouldn't know it." The smile returned.

"You're a country girl? Awesome!" You nodded, picking at your salad.

"Why'd you come here?" The other boy leaned onto the table to look at you past the girl, who was still giving you a distrustful look.

You shrugged. "Parents just wanted to move." When did the kid ever have a say in where the family moved? I did.

"You like it here?"

"It's my first day." They stared at you. "...Sooo I haven't formed an opinion yet." They 'Oh'd. You went back to eating and they finally decided to ignore you. You couldn't tell if they were now bored of you or if they'd try to talk to you every time you sat at their table, but you really hoped it was the former. Taking a survey of the other tables, there really wasn't anywhere else you could sit.

The bell rang and you stood up, oblivious to just how little you ate. You were never hungry anymore and it showed. You were becoming more frail as the days went by, but in this new school, nobody knew your past and nobody would tell you you needed to eat because you were losing a concerning amount of weight. At least here you were given that peace.

"Wait up!" The big kid held out a hand and you stopped, looking blankly at him. "I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Ned, that's Peter," he gestured to the boy, who waved. "And that's Michelle." She barely spared you a glance. "She doesn't like you very much." You gave him a look. "Right, you knew that. Anyways, I could take you to your next class, if you want?"

"No thanks." You tried to walk past him but he cut you off again.

"You might get lost! It's a big school." He sounded so hopeful, and seeing him try so hard to help you in such a small way made you relent.

"Fine. I've got chemistry, room 208?"

"With the lizard?" Your eyes went wide. Ned laughed. "It's just what we call him, you'll find out why when you meet him. Peter and I have that class next, you can walk with us."
