So...this one isn't great. I'm out of practice, clearly (oops)
"Hey Mr. Delmar!" You heard from the front of the store. Upon glancing over a stack of cans, you weren't surprised to see Peter walk up to the counter. His appearance put a smile on your face, despite him showing up nearly every day. You waltzed up to the front, placing items on the shelves as you went.
"The usual?" Your dad asked, already grabbing the ingredients. Peter nodded, snagging a bag of candy and placing it next to the register.
"Hey so um, you wouldn't happen to need another worker would you?" He rubbed his hands together nervously.
"Why, you looking for a job?" Dad rose a brow.
"Yeah, my, um, other job doesn't pay very well." You walked up to the cash register to ring him up, watching your dad out of the corner of your eye for his reaction. Dad stroked his chin hairs (you said it couldn't be called a beard despite his attempts to convince you otherwise).
"What do you think (Y/N)?" You looked up in shock to meet both of their curious expressions.
"I, um, I don't know," you sputtered, not prepared to be put on the spot.
"Do you want someone your age to work with?" You swore your face was red as you slowly nodded. "Alright." You heard Peter mutter a 'yes!' under his breath. "But you need to write a 5 page essay on why you think you're fit to work here and have it here-" Dad smacked his hand on the counter, startling you, "-by tomorrow afternoon." Peter nodded. "I'll show you the ropes tomorrow, now take your sandwich and go." He tossed it at the boy. He was grinning as he ran for the door.
"Thank you Mr. Delmar!" Then he was gone.
"...Um, Dad?"
"Yes mi hija?"
"He didn't pay."
As much as you liked working with Peter, it was awkward to say the least. If you had any confidence at all you might've at least been able to make a good first impression, but the very first thing you tried to teach him ended with milk all over the floor. From that point on your dad explained everything to him and you stayed on the other side of the admittedly small store.
He was a good worker like he promised to be. He also turned in the essay your dad said he wanted.
"I was joking!" your dad laughed, smacking his forehead.
"You were?" Peter blinked. "I stayed up all night-"
"Well that makes up for the sandwich you stole yesterday."
Right now you were sweeping, something you only did when there was nothing else to do. The sun was setting and you'd soon head home to do homework.
A cop car flew past the window, its sirens blaring, startling you from your daze. Peter looked up immediately, watching it go with almost longing in his eyes. You squinted at him, confused why he did that every time he heard a siren.
"Are you going to college?" Peter asked, breaking the silence and making you realize you were staring at him. You flushed and looked down.
"Yeah, just no clue what I want to do," you shrugged, outright refusing to look at him in fear he'd see your red face. "You?"
"Yeah, at least May wants me to. But I like the job I have- my other job I mean, not that this one isn't good it's just my other one is more important but I don't really get paid- not that this one isn't important! You and Mr. Delmar make some amazing sandwiches and- are you laughing at me?" You had begun giggling at his rambling, but stopped abruptly. Your eyes met his in a panic.
