(I'm sorry this story has lasted longer than a chapter, but I'm enjoying writing it! I won't make it into a whole book, but maybe a chapter or two longer.)

(3rd Person P.O.V)

Once the class was dismissed, Severus made his way to Dumbledore's office, informed him of the situation, and canceled his courses for the rest of the day.

Dumbledore got the house elves straight to work fixing it, but he would have to be moved somewhere else for a couple of weeks. Minerva's office is out of the choices, and most others are too far away except one: Y/N's.

"I'll see what I can find!" He assured Severus.

Severus made his way to the teachers' lounge to read. He entered the room, picking up a book and opening it.

Just meters away on the same couch, unnoticed by the man who had just entered, sat the woman he couldn't seem to get out of his mind. She sat curled in a ball reading. They were both deep in their reading when Y/n's muggle watch started to beep. Severus jumped, lifting his head from his book. Y/n, feeling the shift on the couch, turned to apologise, but seeing who was sitting next to her, she returned to packing away her book.

As she hurried to her feet, she tripped on a rug that was supposed to be tucked under the couch. She stumbled a little before falling into Severus' arms.

"Whuh!" Severus exclaimed in confusion.

Severus didn't move to help Y/n up as he sat embarrassed, with a blush barely noticeable. Y/n got up, flustered, with a VERY notable blush as she apologised several times before scurrying away.

Once the portrait closed, Severus stood and pulled out his wand. With a flick of his wrist, the rug tucked itself under the couch.

(Severus P.O.V)

Blithering idiots, someone could have gotten hurt on that... she could have gotten hurt.

I shake my head to rid my mind of such thoughts. As I went to sit back down, I noticed something shiny between the couch cushions. I reach in to grab it. The nicely polished necklace that Y/n had clung to for so many years, she had regularly polished throughout school and, I'm sure, after. The chain had broken, and it must have fallen off when she fell. I pocketed it while heading back to my room.

I placed the trinket on the dining table, took my wand out again, and cast repro. The chain repaired itself. Grabbing a cloth, I wiped it down, ensuring there wasn't even a speck of dust before heading to Y/n's room. It took some convincing before the portraits let me in, but when it did, I went over to the dining table, placing it down gently before turning and leaving.

(Y/n's P.O.V)

I gave the students the reading for the lesson and then walked around in case anyone needed my help, which I'm sure no one did. I reached up to play with my necklace when I realized it was missing. I calmly made my way back to my desk, searching the floor around it and on my desk.

"What are you looking for, Professor?" One of the first-year Ravenclaw girls in the front row asked as she looked over her book.

"My necklace! I appear to have lost it." I said as calmly as possible while on the inside, I was internally dying!

"I don't believe you had it when you came in; I noted it because you're always wearing it," said one of the Hufflepuff girls seated in the middle row.

"Thank you! I'll look at it after class, so please return to your reading now!"

The end of the class couldn't have come any slower as I felt I would have a mental breakdown for the rest of the lesson.

"Okay, class, there are about ten minutes left, so you can start packing up and have an early mark today." As they packed their stuff, I waited by the door.

"I do hope you find your necklace, Professor!" Said the Hufflepuff girl as she left.

"Thank you, Rosie!" I say as I close the door behind us.

As she left, I hurried back the way I came, searching as I went. I made my way back to the staff common area. Maybe it fell off when I fell. I searched the couch, noting that the rug had been fixed. Still not finding my necklace, I retired to my room, tears streaming down my face.

The last thing I had of my mother, and I had lost it. I curled up on the couch and cried for hours. It was half past ten before I realised I should eat something. I wasn't feeling hungry, but I knew I would regret not eating. I wasn't going to sleep until I found my necklace, so I didn't need to be hungry.

As I made my way into the kitchen, passing through the dining room, something on the table caught my eye—my Necklace!!! I practically ran to it, picking it up and putting it on.

I continued to grab some food and then lie down in bed. I held onto my necklace as I thought. I hadn't been in the dining room all day, definitely not since having the second year, and I had my necklace on during that lesson. Also, the chain wasn't broken or left open, and it looked like it was deliberately placed, not dropped. But how??? I thought as I finally dropped off to sleep.

—— the next morning——

I got up and got ready for the day. I exited my room and started walking down the hall before a thought crossed my mind, and I returned to the portrait outside my room.

"Excuse me, but did anyone else enter my room yesterday?" I asked for the portrait.

"Why yes, the man who showed you around. He often drops by St ops in front of me, then walks back the way he came, muttering, but yesterday was the first time he actually asked to come in. He said he had your necklace, and he was sure you would be looking for it. He would be in and out in five minutes or less, so I let him in. I see he did return the necklace." The portrait chatted away.

"Thank you! Next time, can you tell me when he drops by? And unless I tell you he can come in, don't let him in, please?" I asked for the portrait before we exchanged farewells, and I left.
