I was walking through the halls when I heard it: a thud, a whimper of pain, and laughter. I ran towards the source of the noise. A group of people were gathered in a circle, kicking at something on the ground. When they saw me, they scattered. The thing they'd been kicking at was a freshman girl. She was beautiful, with tan skin, long black hair with red streaks, and bright green eyes. When she saw me, her eyes filled with fear, and she got up and dashed off faster than one would expect from someone who'd just gotten beat up. The image of the girl haunted me for the rest of the day. She was like a woodland spirit: small and slim, here one moment and gone the next. After school, I walked to a small clearing in the woods, which had a bench and a small stream. When I got there, though, I found that someone else had beaten me to it. A girl with long black hair was juggling a soccer ball, doing tricks and stuff. She launched the ball off her foot, and it came soaring towards me. I caught it easily on my foot. The girl looked up to see where her ball had gone, and saw me. It was the same girl from earlier. Her eyes filled with fear again, and she seemed to consider bolting. "Hey. It's alright." I said softly. "I'm not going to hurt you." the fear left her eyes, replaced by suspicion. "Come sit." I said, launching her ball back to her and sitting down on the bench, patting the spot next to me. She juggled the ball over to the bench and sat down. "I'm Tobin Heath." I said, sticking my hand out. "I'm a sophomore. What's your name?" "Thalia Skywalker." the girl said, shaking my hand. "I'm a freshman." I nodded. "So do you play?" I asked, nodding at the soccer ball in her lap. "Yeah." she said. "I'm a forward." "Cool." I said. "I play left middy." "Cool." Thalia said. "Thalia, why were you getting beaten up at school?" I asked. "cuz I don't belong to a category." Thalia said. "I'm an athlete and a nerd, so no one likes me." "Well, I like you just fine." I said, smiling at her. She looked up at me, her green eyes filled with surprise. "You do?" she asked. I nodded. "I do." I said. "You don't deserve the shit that people throw at you. You're a good kid." "You're the first friend I've had in a long time." Thalia said. "Well, I'm glad that you have a friend again." I said. To my surprise, Thalia wrapped her arms around me. "Thank you." she said. "Thank you for saving me."
