Alex POV

The next day, Tobin and I went out for lunch. We were sitting at a table and all I could think about was what she was saying about marriage yesterday. I mean, I'm not saying I wanna get married this second, but knowing that there's something for us in the near future would be nice. I couldn't take it anymore so I decided to ask her.
"Hey, so that stuff you were saying about marriage yesterday, you don't really believe that, do you?" I asked.
"Sure I do." She answered quickly.
"In fact, I think the whole concept of marriage is unnatural. I mean, look at pigs, let's take a second here to look at pigs." I couldn't believe what was coming out of her mouth.
"Pigs don't mate for life. A pig could have a hundred sexual partners in their lives. And that's just an ordinary pig, not even a pig that's good at sports."
"Wait a minute," I said. "Are you honestly telling me that, that you may never wanna get married?" I asked.
"Well never say never, but yeah, never." She shrugged. I shook my head.
"Oh my god. Th-then what are we even doing? What is this?" I gestured to us.
"Woah woah woah," she said, "what is all this pressure? Why don't you just calm down Lex?" She said. I grabbed my purse and stood up.
"You know what? I gotta go." I ran out. I wasn't too sure where to go, so I went one of the few places I knew. The bar Tobin used to play at. Being it was only about three o'clock, there were barely any people there. I sat down with my purse in my lap and ordered a scotch on the rocks with a twist. I drank about half of it and then out my head down. I let out a long sigh until I heard someone call my name.
"Alex?" They said. My head snapped up. I was met with a silhouette, but I recognized it. They walked closer towards me.
"Brianna?" I asked. She nodded and sat down.
"Wh-what are you doing here?" I asked. "Why are you in town?"
"Well, your home town does have some great bars." She laughed. I joined.
"Yeah, yeah they do." We nodded. "Did you come all the way to Jersey just for that?" She smiled.
"No, no I came here to tell you something." I nodded for her to continue.
"I came her to tell you, that, I'm still in love with you." She looked back at me. I didn't know what to say. I just started at her.
"What, uh, what did you... what?" I stuttered out. She sighed.
"I still love you." She whispered.
"And I know I probably shouldn't be telling you this, you're with Tobin, you know? But I knew if I didn't tell you I'd be regretting it for the rest of my life. Letting you go was the stupidest thing I ever did. Listen, I'm sorry. I know this is the wrong time and the wrong place. But I had to tell you. I wanna spend my life with you. I wanna marry you." She said. I just sat there. I turned to look straight ahead.
" I know this is crazy, but am I too late?" She put a hand in my back.
"Yes. Yes you're too late. I mean we're WAS all this a year or so ago?" I asked.
"Well I was an idiot, and I tried to forget you, I really did. After we broke up I spent six months in Africa trying to get you out of my head."
"What were you doing in Africa?" I asked.
"Working with blind kids." She said. I put my head down again.
"Ugh, you aren't making this easy." I whined.
"I'm sorry. But, it's not gunna happen." I said.
"Ok, that's fine. I'll walk away, and I'll never bother you again. But only if you tell me that Tobin is willing to give you everything I am." She said.
"Well she is. I mean, all Tobin talks about is marriage. In fact, I'm making her wait." I said.
"Really? Why?" She asked.
"Why?" I repeated. "Because of the government." I said. Brianna gave me a strange look, but then nodded and walked away. I groaned and finished my drink. My head was spinning, not from the alcohol, but from the confusion. Again, I didn't know where to go, so I walked the five block journey to Tobin's old house. Kelley, JJ, and Ash were there.
"Hey Alex." They said.
"Hi." I said shortly.
"You alright?" JJ asked. I let out a sigh.
"Just having one of those days, when you realize you're in a dead end relationship." I said tossing my purse on the couch.
"Tons giving you a hard time huh?" Kelley asked.
"I mean it's not like I wanna get married tomorrow. But I'd like to believe I'm in a relationship that's going somewhere." I said.
"Well you know Tobin." Ash said.
"No, apparently I don't know Tobin." I ran a hand through my hair. "Not anymore. It's like something's changed."
"Maybe you changed." JJ said.
"I didn't change." I said.
"Maybe that's the problem." Ash responded, I gave them a confused look.
"What?" I asked.
"Look, Lex, Tobin is a complex woman, one who is unlikely to take a wife." Kelley said. "Alex, face it, Tobin is against marriage and always will be." She sat back on the couch. I grabbed my purse.
"Yeah, well, there's some people who do wanna marry me." I said walking towards the door.
"There are?" JJ said.
"Yeah, Brianna." They all jumped up.
"B-B-Brianna said she wants to marry you?" Kelley asked. I nodded.
"And Tobin's telling you how much she hates marriage?" I nodded again.
"Tobin LOVES marriage!" Kelley said.
"You just told me that Tobin was a complex woman, and unlikely to take a wife!" I said.
"...you got THAT from what I said?" Kelley asked. I walked out the door and down the street. This time I knew where I was going. It was about a 15 minutes walk. I walked up to room 12A of a local beachfront hotel. I knocked on the door and it swung open. I was met with the surprised face of Brianna. We just looked at each other for a second. In a small voice, I said, "I-I don't know why I'm here."
"I didn't ask." She responded with the same volume.
"You wanna come in?" She asked, making room in the door way.
"I don't know." I said. She nodded.
"Ok, then I'll just leave the door open and go sit in the couch. She said as she walked away. I shook my head and walked in closing the door behind me.
"Tobin is an idiot." I said. Brianna jumped up.
"Drink?" She asked.
"Yeah. I'll have a scotch on-" she cut me off.
"On the rocks with a twist. I remember." She smiled and stared to make it.
"So Alex, let me ask you. Since we broke up, do you ever, think about us?" She said.
"Uh no, no. Because getting over you was, pretty rough, so I never let myself think about you." She nodded and turned back around. I stood up and walked around the hotel.
"God even you're hotel room is like you. Mature, and sophisticated." She laughed.
"See this is somewhere an adult could live. No superhero posters hung on walls, no pinball machine, this is a grown up' place. I need to be with a grown up, you know?" I asked.
"Yeah." She said, "you're saying that you need to be with someone more mature. Maybe someone with, a collage degree, or even a high school diploma." She said, hinting at some of the awards Tobin hadn't received.
"Lets face it, I'm not a kid anymore, I need to be with someone who wants the same things I do. I mean, showing up after a year and saying you love me, I want that! Talking about pig sex over lunch, I don't want that!" I said pacing back and forth.
"I think that's a fair request." She said.
"Fair?" I said, "don't even talk to me about fair. Fair would've been you wanting to marry me then. Fair would be Tobs wanting to marry me now. Trust me, none of this is fair." I started breathing heavier and Brianna came and wrapped me in a hug to calm me down. Once I did we pulled back and looked at each other.
"I-I I don't know, I..." I stuttered. She put a hand up.
"I know." She said.
"I need to figure some stuff out." I continued.
"Take all the time you need." She said, "Ten, twenty minutes even." We shared a small laugh.
"I'll be here." She said. I smiled and walked out.
