Tobin POV
We raced to the hospital. I broke every driving law on the way and in between Alex painfully gripping my arm, she had time to comment on it. Once we got there she parked the car and ran me inside.
"Can I get a wheelchair over here?" I called out. "I've got a pregnant woman!" She yelled. A nurse came over with one, having me sit down.
"Mrs. Heath, are you alright?" She said. Alex nodded as she took a seat.
"Let's take you to a room." She said. I followed them down the hall. They settled Alex in a bed and hooked her up to some machines. The nurse left, offering help if needed. I was freaking out. I paced around the room for a while, biting my thumb nail.
"Tobin stop you're making me nervous." Alex said.
"I'm kinda freaking out here." I said.
"Why babe?" She asked.
"I just don't want you to be uncomfortable. Are you ok? Does your back hurt?" I asked fluffing her pillow.
"Tobin." She said grabbing at my shirt, "it's gunna be fine." She said. I nodded and kissed her, but still couldn't stop pacing. I picked up a piece of metal from the table and turned to Alex.
"What could this possibly do?" I asked.
"That's for opening the cervix." A man with a deep voice said from the door.
"That ones from the dirty pile." He said walking towards me. I put it down as fast as I could and he laughed.
"Why does this keep happening to me?" I whispered. He extended his hand towards me.
"Hi, I'm Doctor Salvatici, but you can call me, Doc or Dr. S, that's what most people prefer." He said taking Alex's hand to check her pulse.
"So you work with Dr. Cotler then?" She asked. He let go of her and sighed.
"Now I want you to remain calm when I say this, Dr. Cotler appendix burst an hour ago. He's in emergency surgery." I could see Alex get panicked.
"No no we need Dr. Cotler because he knows how hard and how-" the doctor stopped her.
"Between his screams of pain he told me all about the babies and how complicated this birth is going to be, but I'm here to give it my all."
"This is just some kind of bad joke, right?" I asked.
"Unfortunately no." He said.
"Listen, honey I am the best of the best. And I promise you, I will do all that I can to send you home with three happy health babies today. Do we have a deal?" He asked. Alex and I nodded. He ran a few more tests before leaving.
After a while Alex had to be moved to a room where she could birth the children. We were talking up until she got her next contraction. Once it passed she sighed out.
"As soon as this is over, I'm never doing this again." She said.
"Three kids? I don't think we'll be back any time soon." I laughed.
"You know I'm almost glad Cotler's appendix burst, I like you two." Dr. S said.
"Now I thought we'd have a conversation before things got too intense." He said.
"That sounds nice." Alex said still. Dragging heavily. "So where are you from?" She asked.
"Not that kind of conversation. The babies are in a very difficult position and if anything were to hap-"
"No I'm sorry, we're not having this conversation." I said.
"Tobin." Alex said.
"No, I'm going home with three healthy babies and one healthy wife."
"Now I know-" Dr. S started.
"You know, we have three cribs at our house. Three highchairs. My friends knitted three onesies and they are slow and awful knitters. But they knitted them for our three children." Dr. S looked at me.
"Now I need everybody in this room to believe me when I say that we will be going home today with three healthy children and one healthy wife." I turned to Alex.
"Do you believe it babe?" I asked. She gave me a lazy smile.
"I love you. Yeah, I believe it."
"Doc?" I asked. He smiled at me.
"I believe I like you. Let's start with that." He said.
