"Hey! Guys! Cmon, we gotta move, we can't miss this flight." I said pushing the kids in front of me.
"Alex! Bring them through security please!" I called up to her. She gave me an ok sign and rounded them up. We pushed ahead, through crowds of people. Eventually we got through security and went on to our terminal.
"Mom can we get food?" Spencer asked.
"No." I said.
"Why not?"
"Because you took so long getting out of the house we don't have time for food." He started arguing, but I was barely listening. Instead my ears were picking up Alex conversation with Shan.
"Momma can I go to the bathroom?" She asked.
"No baby there's no time, you can go on the plane." Alex said. She let out a grunt.
"Momma those bathrooms are disgusting!"
"I'm sorry Shan, but if you guys packed like mom and I said, we'd have time to use the nicer bathrooms." She said, getting a bit miffed.
"Jeez, you don't have to be so passive aggressive. Calm the hell down." Shan said.
"Hey!" I called before Alex could. "I raised you well enough to know you don't talk back to momma. I wanna hear an apology." I said.
"Sorry momma." She grumbled. Spencer was still bickering to a half listening Jeff.
"Oh my god, just shut up, you can go a few hours without food!" He said. The boys started to fight while Shannon tried to break it up. Alex and I shared an exhausted glance. We rolled up to the counter to get our tickets.
"Good morning Mrs. Heath." The woman said.
"Hi, we're checking in for the flight to Tampa Florida." We we're making a trip to see Alex's mom and her new husband.
"Yes, you'll have seats 30A, B, D, E, F." She smiled. I looked behind me at our quarreling kids and back at my exhausted wife.
"Is there any chance our seats," I gestured to Alex and I, "are no where near their seats?" I asked. Alex looked at me like I was crazy. She typed on her computer for a second.
"We do have two first class seats available." She said. I looked at Alex. She smiled.
"Book em." I said to the woman. She smiled and handed us our tickets. I gave the kids theirs and we pushed on to the gate.
"Alright, down that way guys, all the way back." They walked to where I was pointing.
"Ok," I whispered, "I'll go tell the kids we moved, can you take our bags?" I asked Alex.
"You got it babe." She winked at me. I smiled at her and gave her a quick kiss.
"Mom? You guys coming?" Shannon asked. The kids turned to look at me.
"Uh here's the thing, momma and I upgraded to first class." I said.
"What?" Spencer said, "Thats not fair!"
"Sorry guys!" I said turning to leave. I walked through the curtain. Bigger seats, more room, cup holders. I saw Alex stood up and wave to me. I nodded to her and walked to our seats. I slumped down and let a breath out.
"How were the kids?" She asked.
"Not happy, but now they won't be able to complain for two hours, so it's worth it in my book." She laughed.
"I got your favorite." She said as a woman came by with a Stella for me and a gin and tonic for Alex.
"I love first class, and I love you." I said kissing her.
