Mommmm!" I heard Shan call me from downstairs.
"Can we go yet?" She asked.
"Shan just give me five minutes!" I called back. I was hunched over my desk.
"Cmon mom!" She called.
"Shan let me ask you a question. Do you like having food on the table?" I said.
"Yeah?" She said, more as a question.
"Ok, then let me write a song, so I have money to buy you food." I heard her let out a grunt, but didn't fight back. It took me a few minutes to finish but I finally got downstairs.
"Hey honey, what are you doing?" Alex asked when she saw Shan sitting at the counter. She ran a hand through her hair. Spencer was sitting on the couch playing video games and Jeff was at table doing homework.
"Just waiting for mom to finish a song so she can take me driving." I started walking towards them, grabbing my keys along the way.
"Well, next time you know I could just take you."
"No!" Jeff, Spencer, Shan, and I all said in sync. Alex turned to look at us.
"What?" She asked. The four of us all exchanged glances.
"Well, momma I just figured you were busy." Shan said.
"Mmhm, Shan you're a worse liar than your mother." She turned to look at me.
"Babe?" She questioned.
"Ok," I stood up, "Lex, when I tell you this, know that I love you with all my heart and have for like 23 years and-" she cut me off.
"Tobs."
"Ok, ok, Alex I love you more than life itself, but you're the worst driver in the world." Her face totally changed.
"What?" She said.
"Oh cmon momma, the other day you almost broke our necks with that hard stop." I heard the boys chuckle behind me. I turned around to glare at them and they stopped, but then I broke out in a grin and they stared up again.
"Ah!" Alex said and they stopped immediately.
"So why is this the first in hearing of this?" She turned back to me.
"Ok do you remember how rocky we were all through high school, and then four years later?" I asked looking for an excuse.
"Yes Tobs, you leaving for months to go to other countries made me so upset but you telling me that I'm not a great driver would send me over the edge." I gave her a playful eye roll.
"Ok, I'm sorry." I said.
"Mhmm." She said, "Have fun on the couch tonight." She gave me a chaste kiss on the cheek and walked away. While the kids all "oooohed" behind us.
"Keep mocking, or I'll make you drive with momma." That seemed to shut them up.
