Tobin POV

"Hi, uh, can we maybe, talk?"
"I don't think that's the best-"
"Yeah, sure, come in." Alex said from behind me. I turned to her and she nodded. Reluctantly, I moved out of the way to let my mother in. She slowly walked up the stairs and Alex gestured for her to sit on the couch.
"So," I said, "what made you come here? At three a.m.?" I asked. She let out a breath.
"Tobin, I know we aren't on the best of terms," I scoffed, that was an understatement.
"But there's something important you need to know."
"I already know everything I need to know about you." I said.
"No Tobin, really, you'll want to know this." She said.
"Really? How long can we play this game? Because I'm tired of it. I'm so over it. The push and pull of you leaving and coming back and then leaving again. Because it feels like I'm losing a parent over and over again. And I really don't need that. I don't want to hear your sob story. I don't want to hear your excuse. I just want you to leave me alone." I said. I felt my voice break. Alex sat down next to me and put a hand in my back.
"Tobs," she said, "I really think you should hear this. Trust me." I sniffles and nodded, but only to her.
"Tobin, after I'd left, and run off with someone. There was a while where I was only with him." She said.
"What does that have to do with anything?" I asked.
"Well we were 'together'."
"I still don't see the point of that."
"Well we were seeing each other and then one day, there was... an accident." She said.
"Want does that mean?" I asked.
"I'm not sure how, but I'd gotten pregnant." She said. I sat up to look at her.
"And, and did you keep it?" I asked. She nodded.
"That means, that, that I..." I trailed off. My head was spinning.
"Tobin, you have a half brother." She said. I stood up, and sat down, then stood up again. I repeated this a few times before Alex had to hold me down.
"So, what does this mean?" I asked.
"It can mean anything you want it to mean." She said.
"Bullshit." I said, "what dies it mean." I stated.
"I-I don't know. You can meet him if you'd like. He's a few years younger than you. His name if Jeff." I just stared back at her. What else was I supposed to do?
"He lives up in New York, he has a girlfriend, he's-"
"Were you there for him?" I asked.
"...what?" She said.
"Were you there for him? Growing up, going into adulthood. Were you there for him, throughout his life?" I asked. She nodded uncomfortably.
"And I would've been there for you-" I stopped her.
"Good. At least he got a mother." I said standing up and walking back to our room.
"Tobin! Tobin!" Alex called back to me as she followed me.
"Why'd you do that?" She asked.
"It wasn't a mean thing. I meant it. I'm glad the kid had a mother around." I said not looking at Alex.
"Are you going to meet him?" She asked.
"I don't see why I should."
"Because he's your half brother Tobs."
"So? He doesn't know about me. I'm doing alright without him."
"Don't you want to see how he's doing?"
"I think it would just complicate everything Alex." I said.
"But what if he's great? What if you could be great friends?"
"He was raised by my mother how great could he be?" I said with a slight smile.
"I'm serious." She said. I turned around for the first time.
"So am I." We looked at each other for a while before she spoke.
"Listen. We're going to have a kid. Wouldn't it be a good idea to get all stuff like this out of the way, so we can start fresh and raise our kids and start a new life?" She said.
"I mean, I guess." I mumbled. After a little while we walked out and back to the table. I stood with my arms crossed, looking down to my mother.
"Ok." I said.
"Ok?" She asked.
"Ok. Give me the address, or number, or whatever. I'll meet Jeff."
