Matthew Meet Maisie

"Daddy where is mummy?" Matthew questions as he follows Joe.

"She's just down here" he smiles as he comes to her door.

They walk down a row of bed until Matthew sees Niamh sat in the end bed. "Mummy!" Matthew says excitedly.

"Hey baby" Niamh smiles as he runs up to hug her.

Niamh lifts him onto the bed and Maisie is in the cot. "Oh god you've actually put her down" Joe laughs as he stands at the end of the bed.

"Only just this second" she laughs.

"Matthew do you want to meet your baby sister?" Joe questions with a smile.

"Sister?" He asks.

"Yes Mummy had a baby Girl" Joe smirks as he watches Matthews's facial expression.

"But I want a brother" Matthew says.

Niamh and Joe exchange looks before Joe walks over to Maisie and lifts her up. "Look at her Matthew, I'm sure she'd like to get to know her big brother?" Joe smiles trying to reason with him.

"How about you sit back and you can have a better look" Joe smiles as Niamh helps to sit him back.

Matthew doesn't say much but sits himself down. Joe brings Maisie over to him and sits himself on the side of the bed so Matthew can see her. "Her name is Maisie, Matthew" Niamh smiles.

Matthew just sits there staring at the little baby. "Would you like to hold her" Joe asks Matthew.

Matthew shrugs his shoulders "Matthew sweetie, go on hold her" Barbara says trying to edge him on

"I'll help you look" Joe smiles as he helps Matthew to hold his arms out and Joe supports her head as Matthew holds her.

Matthew sits there stunned unsure what to do. "Do you like her?" Niamh smiles.

"No!" Matthew huffs.

"Your her big brother Matthew" Niamh says to try and get him to come to terms with her.

"Are you sure it's a girl mummy? I'd perfer a brother" Matthew smiles.

"It's really a girl, the lovely nurse checked" she laughs.

Matthew frowns and tries to push her away. "Matthew be careful! She's very delicate" Niamh warns.

Niamh takes Maisie off Matthew and gently rocks her.

Matthew gets off the bed and goes to walk out. "Matthew James McFadden, you dare leave that door, you'll get slapped legs!" Joe warns sternly.

"I don't want a sister!" He yells.

"Shush, Matthew. Babies are trying to sleep" Joe says as he goes after him leaving Niamh with Barbara.

"He will come round" Barbara tries to sooth Niamh.

Niamh sighs and looks down at Maisie, "I feel so bad..." Niamh mutters.

"Why's that?" Barbara asks.

"He's upset, I was expecting him to be excited. I feel like I shouldn't of..." Niamh is cut off by Barbara.

"Don't you dare doubt on having Maisie, she is the best thing to happen to you pair, besides having Matthew and getting married" Barbara smiles as she looks down at Maisie.

"I just wanted him to love her like we do" she sighs.

"He'll come round" Barbara smiles and kisses Niamh's head. "Now I want some cuddles" She adds.

Niamh smiles and carefully hands Maisie to her mum.

"Oh ain't she just a wee thing, my special little granddaughter" she coos.

"First granddaughter" Niamh smiles.

Yes, I never thought I'd see the day, I was expecting more boys" Barbara smiles as she rocks Maisie softly.

"I guessed she surprised us all" Niamh smiles.

Barbara smiles happily down at Maisie. "I thought you was going to have another boy" she explains.

"What makes you say that" she asks.

"The family just seem to be full of boys, a little girl is just what we need" Barbara smiles.

"She has both the boys to look out for her" Niamh laughs.

"Ain't that brilliant, she might become a bit of a Tom boy... as you may say" Barbara laughs as she rocks Maisie gently.

"But with my influence" Niamh laughs.

Barbara nods and laughs, "she'll be wearing pink dresses and bows before you know it, you're just going to love having her to dress up" she replies to Niamh.

"You won't believe the amount of outfits we've got for her already" Niamh smirks.

"All I'm neutral colours I presume?" She asks.

Niamh nods and giggles as Maisie stirs slightly. "Yes, well I got a few pink, because I even dressed Matthew in pink when he was a baby."

"He wouldn't dare let me dress him in pink anymore" Niamh smiles as she watches them.

"Really?" Barbara smiles.

"Yes he would have a full blown screaming fit" Niamh laughs with an eye roll.

"I wonder how Joe is getting on" Niamh says.

"Hopefully not bad, Matthew wasn't best pleased was he? But then again he was so excited this morning" Barbara explains before kissing Maisie's head and passing her back to Niamh.

"Really?" Niamh smiles.

"He was" Barbara replies. "Right do you need anything? And you may need to brush your hair, you look like you've been dragged through a hedge backwards" she laughs.

"Oh charming that is" Niamh laughs.

"Want some help?" She asks and Niamh nods. "Right where did you put that hair bobble from earlier, I'll brush and tie your hair up" Barbara adds as she grabs her hair brush out her handbag.

Barbara brushes Niamh's hair out and puts it up in a bun before putting it back.

Niamh smiles and gets herself up and puts Maisie back down in the cot. "I feel like I should go find out where Joe is" Niamh says a little hesitant as she doesn't want to leave Maisie.

"Do you want me to watch her?" Barbara asks.

They both look at each other and Niamh hesitates looking at Maisie, "I'll be right back."
