Birthday party invite

Niamh has just arrived at the pre-school and is now waiting outside with all the other mothers. She doesn't really know any of the parents as Matthew has only been at the Nursery two months.

She stands the quietly as some of the mothers talk amongst themselves. Niamh looks down at her phone and checks the time, before she knows it a few children start to come out.

These children are the year lower than what Matthew is in so she knows it'll be a bit of a wait. She smiles as she watches a two year old girl run over to her mum and hugs her.

This melts her heart and she smiles happily to herself.

Soon enough Matthews's class come out with the nursery nurse, Matthew catches sight of his Mum and runs over to her "Mummy!" He shouts as he runs to her.

Niamh smiles "hey baby."

Matthew hugs her tightly as she crouches down to his height, she kisses his cheek and takes a piece of A3 paper off him.

"What's this Matty?" She asks with a smile.

"My drawing" Matthew smiles happily.

She opens the paper and looks at it, "woah this is amazing Matthew" Niamh smiles.

"Look to Mummy, me and Daddy" Matthew says proudly.

"Who are the rest of the people?" She asks.

"Auntie Chlo, Nanna, Granny, Granddad, Jordan and a baby" he says.

Niamh takes his other bag off him and looks at the drawing, "who's baby?" She asks.

He doesn't reply as he gets distracted by a boy on his tricycle. She stands back up and takes his hand and they head towards the gates.

"Excuse me" someone calls from behind, Niamh ignores it as she thinks it's for someone else until she feels someone touch her shoulder.

She spins around to see another mother with a little boy holding her hand. She hands Niamh a envelope "its Barney's birthday in a fortnights time and he wants to invite Matthew" she explains.

Niamh smiles "oh thank you" she says kindly.

"Fancy dress and all the details are inside, can you fill out the return slip if you can make it with him and fill out the food form" the woman explains.

Niamh nods "yes thank you I will get it back to you as soon as I've spoken to my partner to see if we can get him there" she replies.

Niamh then leaves the school ground and walks home with Matthew. "Check this out Matthew, your first party and it's fancy dress" Niamh says cheerily to him.

"What's fancy dwress?" He asks.

"You get to go dressed up, like you can go as Spider-Man or Peter Pan" Niamh giggles as Matthew finally gets what it means.

They get home and Matthew goes straight and plays with his toys, "what you got there?" Joe asks as he comes through from the study.

"Bits of Matthews, he's been invited to a party on the 3rd March" Niamh smiles happily.

"Oh great... and let me guess you want me to take him?" He laughs.

"No no it's a Saturday we can take him.... unless you've got something better to do with your time" she smiles. 
Niamh puts her keys back up on the key rack and takes her phone out her pocket.
"Oh Matthew drew a picture today and well he was going on about a baby... but then he got distracted" Niamh explains.

"Oh? But what do you mean?" He says.

"Look that's pretty clearly a baby or just a very small human" Niamh says.

"It could be a dog" Joe laughs.

Niamh nods as she tilts her head a little bit more and tries to figure out what it actually is.

"Matthew? Come here please" Joe calls.

Matthew comes running through and looks up at the two, "daddy has been looking at your drawing tell him who all the people are" Niamh says.

He nods and walks over to Joe and tells him "Daddy, Mummy, Me, Granny, Granddad, Nanna, Jordan and Auntie Chlo... and baby" Matthew says.

"Who's baby?" Joe asks.

"Mummy's" Matthew smiles.

Niamh looks at Joe and raises an eyebrow to show she was right, "Mummy hasn't got a baby... you're her baby" Joe smiles.

He looks at the two a little worried by what he has said, his lips tremble a little and he lets out a cry.

Niamh lifts him up and hugs him tightly before carrying Matthew through to the lounge. "Hey shh, don't cry" Niamh says while sitting herself down on the sofa.

"You didn't do anything wrong" Joe smiles.

"Tell mummy what's wrong?" Niamh smiles.

Matthew tries to suck his thumb but Niamh stops him, "come on" Joe smiles and tickles his belly.

"But the lady at school said everyone has a brother or sista" he says.

Niamh looks up at Joe as she doesn't know what to say, "maybe where you're a wee bit older, we can consider a brother or sister" Joe says.

Matthew nods and wipes his eyes with his sleeve. "Don't do that" Niamh tuts and hands Matthew a tissue.

"Does your friends have baby brothers and sisters?" Joe asks.

Matthew nods but seems a little unsure, "who?" Niamh asks.

"Barney" he replies quietly.

Niamh smiles "that's the boy who's got a party in a fortnights time" Niamh says.

Niamh smiles and kisses Joe again. Matthew watches them and he smiles before going over to Niamh and kissing her cheek.
