One day Carlos was sitting at the kitchen table, writing in his journal. He tried to write down everything that happened in Night Vale in case he had to leave and forgot it all. Suddenly, Cecil came up behind him and put his hands on his shoulders.
"Carlos," Cecil said. "What is that?" He was talking about the pen in Carlos's hand.
"It's a pen." Carlos said, looking up at Cecil.
Cecil jumped back. From across the kitchen he said, "CARLOS, THAT'S ILLEGAL!"
"What am I ment to take notes with then, Ceec?" Carlos asked, turning in his chair to look at Cecil.
"Blood, feathers, and a stone from the Paleolithic era." Cecil said.
Carlos smiled and rolled his eyes. "If it makes you feel better, I'll only write notes at the lab."
Cecil nodded. He didn't walk back over to Carlos until the pen was safely tucked into the journal.

The next day, both of them had a day off work. Cecil, who's sleep schedual was unpredictable, was still asleep at lunch time. Carlos tried to be quite as he made lunch for himself. Cecil walked into the kitchen wearing pajama pants and the shirt he wore to work yesterday. Carlos turned around to offer him some food.
"Hey, Ceec, want a sandwich?" Carlos asked.
     "What?" Cecil asked.
"It's lunch time. I made a sandwich. Do you want one? I can make pasta instead if you would rather have that."
CARLOS!" Cecil exclaimed. "THOSE ARE WHEAT AND WHEAT BY-PRODUCTS! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?"

On Valentine's Day, Carlos got Cecil a card. The card came with the candy hearts. Cecil left really early this morning, so Carlos took them to the radio station. Cecil went to the weather and they sat in the break room for coffee.
"Happy Valentine's Day, Ceec." Carlos said, trying to hand Cecil the card.
"CARLOS, ARE YOU TRYING TO GET US KILLED!?" Cecil exclaimed.
"It's not a wheat or wheat by-product?" Carlos said it like a question.
"Candy hearts!" Cecil said as if that was supposed to clear everything up.
"It's not made from oranges either?"
"Cards!" Cecil said. "The Valentine's Day massacre!"
"The Valentine's Day massacre was in the 1920's in New York." Carlos said.
"The greeting card people will kill us!" Cecil said.
Suddenly it dawned on Carlos. The Valentine's Day massacre a couple years ago. Everyone who made it known they had a Valentine was killed. Together, Carlos and Cecil set the card and the hearts on fire. The card had a science pun on it. Cecil wouldn't have gotten it. It said, 'I C8H11NO2+C10H12N2O+C43H66N12O12S2 you.' The formula was the formula for love.
