The Secrets We Keep

Part 53

Hailey POV*

After my conversation with Kim I head down the stairs with Kevin. "So milkshakes and cheeseburgers sounds fun" I say as we walk out the door. "Yeah it is just a treat for V before it's back to baby stuff like build a rocking chair." he says. "shit" I say. "what?" Kev asks. "no it just that I rode in with Jay and he's not here but its fin I'll just Uber hoe no worries" I say taking out my phone. "I can take you home but I'd have to get Vanessa from the call center first if that okay" he says. " Are you sure I don't want to interrupt your plans with-". "You talk to much Hailey just get in the car he says as he open the door for me. When we get to the call center I wait in the car as Kevin walks inside to find Vanessa. They walk out and their holding hand and he's holding her bag. "Hailey what are you guy doing here" Vanessa says. " Jay has the car and he's with Ry" I say. "well thanks for the ride home Kev and have fun tonight " I say winking at them before shutting the door and walking up the stairs of mine and Jays building.

Kevin POV*

 "What's she talking about Kev" Vanessa says. "It a surprise" I say. "another one" she says under her breath. We get home and Vanessa heads straight for the shower. while I got the hall closet to grab blankets, pillows and lanterns.  "Hey babe what are you making dinner or am I" Vanessa asks walking down the stairs. "actually were going out" I say turning around to face her. She looks so beautiful in sweat pants and a my police academy hoodie. "What" she says as she steps towards me. "Just looking ate you and your fat ankles" I say laughing when she hits my side. "I was kidding" I say. " you better so where are we going and I'm guessing this is the surprise." she says. "Yes this is the surprise and we are going to your favorite place" I say letting go of Vanessa and grabbing the blankets, pillows and lanterns to put them in the car. Then I head upstairs to take a quick shower. I get back and Vanessa is asleep on the couch.  "hey baby wake up" I say gently shaking her shoulder. "yeah" she say with her eyes barely open. "lets get you to bed" I say helping her up. "Wait you had the whole night planned and I fell asleep I'm so sorry" she says as I help her into the bed. "No it's okay but you need to eat so I'm going to get us some burger, I'll be back" I say giving her a kiss before I leave the house to get us some food. 

When I get back it' already 7pm and I walk up the stairs to find Vanessa asleep watching dateline. "hey wake you I brought food and milkshakes" I say tapping her leg. "Food" she says with a groggy voice as I take a seat on the other side of the bed to eat with her. " So you watch Dateline now" I say moving my hand to give Vanessa my fries. " Yeah it's interesting to see how many serial killer there are and can we share your-", "Fries" I say before she could finish. "Yeah, thanks" she says before taking some from my hand. After we eat we finish watching Dateline before we both fall asleep.

Jay POV*

I hear the door open as I'm playing with Ry. "Hailey is that you" I say as no one answers. " I have a gun" I add. " Yeah I know that" Hailey says giggling as she walks into Ry's room to sit on the floor next to me. "I'm so sorry I totally forgot we had a son when I got back from the CI run. It felt so nice to be around adults again." she says. "He I get it Adam had to remind me to pick Ry up. But we had a good time at the park" I say getting up. We walk to the kitchen to fix dinner. " So how was the park" Hailey asks. " It was fun for Ry he played with the other little kids and I sat on the bench talking to this other parent, she was really helpful." I say. "she" is all Hailey says as I go back in my memories to that conversation.

"Hey do you mind if I sit here" the young woman asks. "Yeah here" I say moving over so that there's room for the both of us. "So you got a kid here or do you just watch them" she asks. "My um girlfriends son, well I guess my son I mean he calls me dad, Ry he's three and over there" I say as I point to the play ground feeling like I just gave her to much information. " Cool I got four over there is Hunter my oldest daughter, then there's the triplets boys Everett, Koa, and Riley over there. "she says. "wow triplets and there all boys, wow" I say. " Yeah there a handful but me and my husband get through it." she says. "I'm just... wow three at once, I can barely remember to pick one much less four kids."  I say. " Well it's not all rainbows and sunshine some days are tough and especially with boys as they get older and bigger you have to keep a close eye on injuries in sport, I know your son's only three but is he into any sports " she asks. " I played high school football and I was going to teach him but my girlfriend said no, so I tried baseball and she said no, then I tried soccer and said she would consider it which is probably going to be a no. Now I'm starting to think water sports are the safest option and that's lame. Between me and you though I bought him a  football that I keep at my work" I say. "You should try looking at it from her point of view, that her  only child would be playing a dangerous sport." she says.

 "Where do you work anyways" she asks. "I'm a detective and sorry I forgot to ask your name, mine is Jay Halstead" I say. "My name is Grace. Grace Wesley. Nice to meet you detective Halstead, what does your girlfriend do. I'm a bank teller at the bank a few block from here" she says. "My girlfriend is also a detective we met on the job, she's really great". "Well your girlfriend sound lovely" Grace says. "What about you and your husband" I ask. " Me and my husband Jacob met on the bus back when I worked at a diner. He used to go to the diner to study is what he told me but I caught on to him and asked him out after a couple month. We've been happy ever since with four beautiful kids and a cat" Grace says. "Mommy I'm hungry" Grace hear Koa say. "Well it was nice talking to you Detective Jay Halstead and if you ever need to talk about parenting again I come to the park at least three times a week to tire them out" she say before gathering her kids to go home. " Bye Grace and thanks for the talk" I say getting up to go play with Ry before we had to leave. 

"Well did you learn anything from this Grace person" Hailey asks. "Yeah, lets put him in water sports" I say. "oh my god" Hailey says smiling when she put Ry's plat of food in front of him to eat.
