Interrogation Room w/Matthew
Jane: You okay?
Matthew: Do I look okay? What, you come in here to get your licks in, too?
Jane: Matthew.
Matthew: Why are you here? I told mom that I didn't want to talk to you.
Jane: Your mother and I separated, but I never stopped being your other mother.
Matthew: Oh, yeah. "Ma." It was -- it was a blast hanging out with you all these years -- on the weekends, the summer vacations, Field trips, ballgames. H-how did you find all that time?
Jane: I called. I wrote. I sent birthday presents.
Matthew: You're a liar, Jane. All you cared about was becoming a woman.
Jane: Cut the tough-guy bullshit. I know you're hurt. And I know you're angry. I wasn't there for you. Not because I didn't want to be. But I'm here now.
Matthew: I don't need you now. I'm fine.
Jane: The hell you are. You're accused of shooting a cop. I want to know, did you? Did you do that, Matt? Because the boy I knew and loved couldn't.
Matthew: I want this woman out of here, and I want a lawyer.
Jane: I got a great lawyer, someone who can help you.
Matthew: No, I want a public defender.
You don't owe me anything, Jane.
Bye-bye.
In the Bullpen
Lindsay: So, who wanted Denise Ryan dead?
Frost: I'm coming up empty. I mean, she had no friends, no job. All she did was take Dakota to school and to dance.
Korsak: And home with Skippy, who has an alibi.
Frost: I dug around in Denise's life to see if we missed somebody. Guess what. Denise Ryan didn't have a single credit card.
Lindsay: Well, they were having money problems.
Frost: No, I mean, like, no credit history - At all.
Korsak: That is weird.
Lindsay: Who makes it to age 35 with no credit? Did you run her social?
Frost: Yeah. It's good. Found a passport, driver's license.
Korsak: What's Jane doing in the crib?
Frost: Cavanaugh said she talked to Matthew.
Korsak: How'd it go?
Frost: Afraid to ask.
They get up and walk to her.
Korsak: Nobody blames you.
Jane: (crying) Matthew does.
Korsak and Lindsay sit down on each side of Jane, Frost stands behind them. Korsak takes the stack of pictures Jane's looking through and they all look at them together.
Jane: (sniffles) That was his first Red Sox Game when he was 3. I was 20. He was ecstatic when I told him I had seats right behind home plate.
Korsak: Oh.
Jane: He loved it.
Korsak: Why did she take him away, Jane?
Jane: I don't know for sure Korsak. She came from money. She told me that when she told her parents three years later that I was the father, they said that they didn't want some poor girl from South Boston like me raising a child with their rich and sophisticated daughter. What they meant was that they didn't want a woman who used to be a man raising their three year old grandson.
