Chapter 12

[Camera shutter clicks]
[indistinct conversations ringing] [Beep]

Korsak: Mother of one of the dancers was stabbed to death. She made it to the stage, then collapsed.

Jane: In front of all these kids? Nobody saw it happen?

Korsak: Nope.

Lindsay: Have you found the crime scene?

Korsak: Just following the blood.

Maura: I'd like to see the body.

Jane's Cellphone rings and she answers it while walking up onto the stage to the scene.

Phone Convo

Jane: Veronica, I don't want to talk to you.

Veronica: Our son's been arrested. I need you Jane.

Jane: Veronica, I'm at a crime scene. Our son is gonna have to sit in custody until I get there. I'll be there as soon as I can.

End of phone convo

Maura: I always wanted to be a competitive dancer, but my mother was a purist. She only let me study Russian ballet.

Jane: (Groans) It's like little league with sequins. How long you got to work out to get biceps like that on a 10-year-old?

Maura: 30 to 40.

Jane: Hours?! And I thought I was doing a good job working out two days a week.

Maura: (kneeling by the body) That is a very sharp pair of scissors. Penetrating stab wound between the third and fourth intercostal.

Jane: Defensive wounds on her hands.
"Sapphire dance studio." Everyone in the studio has touched those scissors.
Says "crime of opportunity" to me.

Korsak: Let's follow this blood trail.

In the Dressing Room

Korsak: Did we have a hurricane this morning?

Jane: (Scoffs) You think this is bad, try living with a brother and a twin sister.

Korsak: (Shakily) O-kay. This is embarrassing.

Jane: It's just a bra, Korsak. Probably more embarrassing to the 12-year-old who left it there. Okay, we got a killer who entered and exited a dance competition. What I want to know is, w-why here, why now?

Lindsay: Twelve dancers and their mothers used this room. I got all the names.

Jane's Cellphone rings again.

Korsak: Okay, who's Veronica and why does she keep calling?

Jane: She's my ex-fiancé. We had a son when we were almost 17. We kept it a secret that I was the father for awhile. She told her parents that the father didn't want him and left. She came over when neither one of our parents were home. No one knew about him except for her parents. But, when he turned 4, they left. I haven't seen or heard from her since. Now, she's calling me 11 years later, saying my 15 year old son has been arrested.
