"Are you positive that you're okay?" Pansy asked with a tight lipped smile, for the fiftieth time.

"Yes Pans, Graham is just...well..."

"Over protective, irritating?" Pansy spoke.

"Exactly" Elizabeth let out a breathy chuckle.

"Well, let's just get today over with and thennn The honourable Slytherin party is tonight, soooo...." Pansy clapped her hands together in excitement.

"I'm not going to that" Elizabeth shook her head. Last year's welcome back party was the best day of her life. Her and Mattheo laughed and danced together all night, he even carried her back to her dorm when she got too drunk.

"Yes you are, I refuse to let you sit in that dorm all year" Pansy crossed her arms over her chest, a stern look on her face.

"Fine!" Elizabeth let out a huff. This wouldn't end well, she could feel it.

"Great" Pansy smiled widely, walking towards her seat in Snape's classroom. The girls had sat together since third year, in the exact same spots, so it was muscle memory now.

Just as Elizabeth dropped her bag down, ready to take her seat, Snape stormed in. His back robes, swishing in the air behind him and then pooling around his ankles as he came to a stop at the front of the class.

"Before you all take your seats....i have made a few changes..." his voice was so bland, so lacklustre. Elizabeth was honestly bored of his lack of any emotion.

"Parkinson and Nott"

"Zabini and lovegood"

"Berkshire and Malfoy"

"Potter and Chang"

"Bones and Abbot"

"Riddle and...."

Oh please Merlin no.

"....Montague"

Elizabeth's eyes widened. She must of done something incredibly terrible in a past life because Merlin was really playing games with her in this one.

"These will be your new partners for the year. I don't want to hear ANY complaints. Any one who refuses will see themselves with an instant...fail" Snape looked around the room in silence before turning to his desk, allowing everyone to find their new seats.

"Nott?! Really, I'm going to avada myself" Pansy exclaimed loudly but Elizabeth just gave her a knowing look. "Oh fuck...I'm sorry Lizzy" Pansy had a sad smile on her face but Elizabeth just shook her head. It wasn't her fault, after all.

Pansy grabbed her bag, skulking across the classroom and dropping down into the seat next to Theo. Elizabeth watched as she rolled her eyes and flipped Theo off, the second he tried to open his mouth.

Elizabeth smirked and shook her head at her friend's actions but her face fell when Mattheo, appeared in front of her. Their eyes locked for what felt like forever, but neither of them said a word as they took their seats. Elizabeth found herself, scooting as far over on her stool as humanly possible, not wanting to accidentally brush against his skin.

"Your first assignment...will be to brew a draught of living death. This will be completed in your lesson next week. Meaning...you have a whole week to do the necessary research. I expect it to be perfect, should anyone make a mistake, I shall assume you are completely incompetent" Snape's eyes scanned the irritated faces that filled the room, his eyes narrowing in on a few specific students.

"You may start...now. It might be beneficial...to list the needed ingredients" Snape hissed out before storming around the other side of his desk and taking a seat, flicking through what looked to be assessments.

Elizabeth wanted to bang her head against the desk until her brain flew out of it. She devised that she would simply do all of the work alone. It was easier that way, Mattheo would pass and they wouldn't have to speak. Win, win.

Although Mattheo seemed to have other plans, because the second he turned his body to face her slightly. Elizabeth looked at him with a glare.

"So, what bits do you want to do..." Mattheo muttered out but Elizabeth was too dumbfounded to say a word.

"Right..." Mattheo sighed, leaning back on his stool. His quill spun around his fingers as the pair sat in silence for the rest of the lesson. No more looks were stolen on either of their parts and the second that Snape dismissed the room, Elizabeth grabbed her bag and made a run for it.

As soon as she was free from the confinement of the classroom, she let out a loud sigh. This year was supposed to be different, better. But it seemed to be going the other way already. The sheer awkward silence that had settled between them was enough to make Elizabeth want to pitch herself off the astronomy tower and she couldn't imagine it would get any better as the year went on.

With heavy footsteps, Elizabeth walked down the corridor, in the direction of transfiguration. She just hoped that Mcgonagall was kinder than Snape had been.

"Beth" Elizabeth spun around at the sound of her brother's voice.

"What do you want" Elizabeth huffed. Not stopping her movements but simply crossing her arms over her chest.

"Listen, I'm sorry about this morning. I just worry about you" Graham jogged to keep up with his sister.

"Yeah well maybe don't embarrass me in front of our whole house Graham..." Elizabeth huffed loudly.

"I'm sorry little sis, forgive me" Graham grabbed his sister's hands, looking at her with the biggest grin she'd ever seen on his face.

"Yes, get away from me weirdo" Elizabeth chuckled, pushing him away by his face.

"Great, see you later? I've got a date with a hot Ravenclaw" Graham winked, which only made Elizabeth gag.

"By date you mean hook up in a broom closet, get away from me" Elizabeth grimaced, shooing her brother away from her and he finally obliged, running off down the corridor to as he'd say 'get some'.

The smile on Elizabeth's face slowly faded as she let out a sigh, making her way, once again, towards her next class of the day.
