Elizabeth stirred, her arms stretching out above her head with a groan. Sunlight was peaking through her curtains, creating a stream of light onto the hardwood floor.
As she rolled onto her side, she took note of Pansy's empty bed. Knowing she was probably down in the common room with the boys.
She pushed herself upwards with her hands, her eyes scanning the room and falling upon a glass of water on her bedside table. A smile graced her face as memories of yesterday flooded her mind. The dull ache in her muscles, confirming it was real.
Although, Mattheo was no where to be seen. It was strange, he always stayed the night but Elizabeth shook the worry from her mind. He was probably in the common room.
She climbed out of bed and made a direct line to her neatly folded uniform, it was a lot quicker to get dressed seeing as she'd fallen asleep naked.
Once her tie was done up neatly under her collar, she brushed through her long brunette waves, scraping them back into a ponytail. She applied a thin layer of lipgloss and a quick black wing to her eyelid. Satisfied with her appearance, she made her way down into the common room.
There was a certain spring in her step as she took on the stairs but it was diminished when her eyes met her friend's distraught faces. All of them, but him. Her heart stopped, everything slowed down as she watched them all look at her, she couldn't miss the undeniable looks of sympathy.
"What?" Elizabeth squeaked out, trying to control her shakey voice.
"Lizzy-..." Pansy's eyes were wide as she stared at her friend, but the look bought no comfort.
"Tell me" Elizabeth remained frozen, she couldn't move, she just stood at the bottom of the stairs.
"Beth you should-..." Enzo started but Elizabeth cut him off.
"Tell me" her voice raised slightly. It wasn't a request, it was a demand.
"Just-read this" Draco stood up slowly, walking across the room. His hand outstretched towards her and her eyes fell downwards, taking notice of the brown paper envelope in his hand and it was undeniably Mattheo's scrawl on the front.
She took it from him gently, staring at it for a few moments before she looked back up at the rest of her friends. Blaise was slumped backwards, a blank expression on his face. He hadn't said a word and that's how she knew, it was bad.
Elizabeth slowly turned on her heel, climbing the same staircase she'd came bounding down only a few minutes earlier. She felt like she was in a trance, her eyes were locked to the letter. Her body was moving by itself, taking her where she needed to go.
She barged into her dorm, not bothering to close the door before she dropped down onto her bed. Her small hands tore at the 'riddle' wax seal, pulling the parchment from the envelope. She swallowed thickly as her eyes scanned the words on the page.
My dearest Elizabeth,
You'll forgive me for doing this in a letter, but it's the only way I'd be able to say what I feel. You know I've never been great with words, I've always found them so, difficult.
