°•. ✿ .•° °•. ✿ .•°Mattheo felt guilt. Probably more than any other person he knew. It was his greatest weakness. No matter how badly he wanted to hurt someone, the guilt would always come back to haunt him.
With Elizabeth, that guilt was magnified. He couldn't stop himself, he wanted her to hate him because that way, she could be happy. Happier than she ever could have been with him.
He didn't hate Theodore Nott, in fact, if it couldn't be him, he was glad it was Theo. The kindest, most compassionate boy he knew.
Doing what he did, would seal their future fate. It would ensure that Elizabeth would never long for him again. He needed it, he needed to know that she would live her life to the fullest, without wishing she was doing it with someone else.
He rolled his cigarette between his finger tips, looking out over the school grounds. This was the last time he would come here, to the fifth floor corridor. It was her spot. But he'd come to love it, it became his safe space, just like it was hers. She was always here, her laughs were trapped in the walls and her eyes in the reflection of the glass.
If he was letting her go, he had to let the reminders of her go too. Except for one, the ring, that rested on the middle finger of his right hand. The one with their initials engraved into it. He would keep it close, until the end of time.
With a sigh, he stood up, sniffling as he threw his cigarette butt out of the window. He dusted his uniform off, shoving his hands deeply into his pocket's before turning on his heel and walking away. He didn't look back, he couldn't. Instead he kept his jaw tensed, willing his emotions to stay at bay.
The walk to the common room, was dull. He could feel eyes on him, but he had no interest in looking up and sneering in their direction. He simply craved comfort but his only comfort was gone. By his own doing.
Or by his father's, he wasn't sure who he blamed anymore; Elizabeth had been right, he didn't fight, he let it happen. Just like he had done the first time he let her go.
He could've done something. Killing Olivia seemed like the easiest option but no matter how irritating the girl was, she was forced into this as much as he was. The truth was, in public, they'd link arms and laugh, they'd share a kiss or two but behind closed doors, they weren't a couple. Nor were they even really friends. They'd come to the agreement, when she realised her efforts were wasted.
Mattheo sighed as he muttered the word 'Mudblood', the common room was empty, with everyone still in their lessons. He was grateful to not have to put up his facade, pretending to hate someone when you loved them, was the most painful thing of all.
With a thud, he fell onto the old battered sofa. The bruising around his eye throbbing slightly. He'd never realised that Theo had such a good right hook.
He tilted his head back, closing his eyes. If he thought hard enough, he could still feel the warmth of Elizabeth's touch.
"Hope that smile is because you're dreaming of something nice and not imagining anyone naked"
Mattheo slowly opened his eyes, his gaze meeting Pansy's. She was sat opposite him, an amused look on her face.
"Fuck off parkin-.."
"Cut the bullshit. It doesn't work on me" Pansy raised an eyebrow.
"You figured it out...do you want a medal?" Mattheo crossed his arms over his chest, watching as the girl snickered slightly.
"No. I just want to know why you're trying to push her away? She's the love of your life, yet you're pushing her in the direction of another man?" Pansy scoffed.
"And I thought you were team Theo" Mattheo rolled his eyed with a smirk.
"No. I'm team, Elizabeth. Whatever makes her happy and whilst she's happy with Theo right now, she loves you. She'll always love you and you're just making damn certain that she never will again" Pansy looked at the boy with sadness written across her features, she could practically see the despair behind his eyes.
"She's better off with him. I have to marry Olivia, how could I ever give her the life she wants. I can't marry her and have children with her...she wants those things. She deserves those things" his hands tangled into his hair before he dragged them down over his face.
"Then you're a better man than I thought Mattheo Riddle. But listen loud and clear, don't lose her completely. She could still be your friend and you could be hers" Pansy nodded her head slowly before standing up and leaving her words to simmer in his mind.
Don't lose her completely. "I've already lost her" Mattheo mumbled to himself or so he thought. Because what he didn't see was Elizabeth, peaking her head slightly into the common room. Her eyes wide and her lip trembling as she watched the brunette boy wallow in sadness and guilt.
"No you haven't" she slapped her hand over her mouth as soon as she heard her own voice.
His eyes found hers immediately but he looked stunned, his mouth opening and closing repeatedly.
"You-why didn't you-we could have..." Elizabeth was stuttering, her voice trembling as tears cascaded down her cheeks.
"Lizzy-.." Mattheo's heart tore in two, his feet moving before his mind had a chance to catch up and the second that she fell into his embrace, he felt a fire relight within.
