Changmin closed the door to his room, tossing his phone onto the bed with a sigh. His eyes darted to the Annabelle doll sitting on his desk, its porcelain face frozen in a twisted smile. Most people would find it creepy, but to Changmin, it was just cute. The doll had been a fan gift from a recent signing event, something he had appreciated given his love for horror-related things. He hadn't thought much about it at first-it was just another cool addition to his collection.
Now, though, every time he glanced at it, a knot of anxiety twisted in his stomach.
It started small. Strange, anonymous texts. At first, he thought they were just another sasaeng fan getting hold of his number. He'd dealt with things like this before. But then, the messages started mentioning details about his private life-things no one should know. How he spent his evenings, what he wore to bed, even the exact moment he sighed after a long day of practice. It became clear that someone was watching him.
And then, the picture arrived. A still frame, grainy but unmistakable-Changmin, sitting on his bed, staring at his phone, his expression tired. In the corner of the image was the edge of the Annabelle doll, its wide, vacant eyes staring directly at him. That's when it hit him.
The doll wasn't just a gift.
It was a tool.
A camera.
Changmin's stomach churned, bile rising in his throat. Someone was watching him, recording him from his own room. His sanctuary was no longer safe. Worse, the messages that followed weren't just about him-they were about his members.
"I know you care about them, Changmin. If you don't do exactly as I say, I'll release everything. Imagine how they'll feel when they find out their most private moments were captured."
Changmin had no choice. He had to protect them.
It had been weeks since Changmin started pulling away from the others. It wasn't obvious at first-just small changes. He smiled less, his usual playful banter with the members growing more reserved. During practice, he threw himself into the choreography with an almost manic intensity, as if hoping to drown out the ever-present fear gnawing at his mind.
He barely slept anymore. His nights were filled with the anxious anticipation of the next message, the next threat. Even when he managed to close his eyes, nightmares plagued his sleep-images of his members being hurt, of their lives shattered because of him.
The lack of rest was starting to show. Dark circles under his eyes, pale skin, and a constant sense of nausea. Every morning, he forced himself to smile, to pretend nothing was wrong. But it was getting harder to keep up the act.
Sunwoo watched Changmin closely from the other side of the practice room, frowning. Changmin wasn't himself. It wasn't just the exhaustion; he was distant, shutting himself off from everyone else. Normally, Changmin would be the first one to crack a joke, the first to laugh, but now...he was quiet. Too quiet.
"Hyung," Sunwoo called out after practice, catching up with Changmin in the hallway. "Are you okay? You've been off lately."
Changmin forced a smile. "I'm fine, just tired. Been practicing a lot."
"Yeah, but...you seem more tired than usual," Sunwoo pressed, his voice tinged with concern. "Are you sure nothing's bothering you?"
For a moment, Changmin hesitated. He wanted to tell Sunwoo everything. He wanted to scream, to confess that he was being blackmailed, that someone had invaded his privacy, that he was terrified for the safety of the members. But the image of the latest threat flashed in his mind-a photo of Younghoon walking home, unaware that he was being watched.
