The energy backstage was electric. The arena outside buzzed with anticipation as Seventeen prepared for one of their biggest concerts of the year. The cheers of thousands of fans were muffled by the thick walls, but their excitement pulsed through the building. Inside the dressing room, Seventeen was focused—jokes and laughter filling the air as the members eased their pre-show jitters.
Wonwoo sat quietly at the edge of the room, his usual calm demeanor masking the discomfort he had been feeling for days. His eyesight had always been bad, something he'd been open about with his members and fans. But lately, it seemed to be getting worse. His contacts were becoming more and more of a nuisance, constantly irritating his eyes and blurring his vision at the worst possible times.
He blinked a few times, trying to clear his sight as he watched the others go through a final run-through of the choreography. Every now and then, a sharp pain would flare behind his eyes, like a hot needle pressing into his skull. He knew what it was—eye strain. The strain had been building for days now, and every rehearsal, every performance under bright stage lights only made it worse.
But this was their big night. Wonwoo couldn't let his personal struggles get in the way of their performance. He couldn't risk disappointing the fans or making mistakes that would throw off the group. He forced a smile when Mingyu looked over at him, waving off the concern in his eyes.
"Wonwoo-hyung, you good?" Mingyu asked as he plopped down next to him, sweat still clinging to his skin from their earlier warm-up.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Wonwoo lied, squinting a little as he tried to make out Mingyu's face clearly.
Mingyu studied him for a moment, unconvinced. "You sure? You've been rubbing your eyes a lot lately."
"I'm fine," Wonwoo repeated, his voice gentle but firm. "Just tired."
Mingyu wasn't completely convinced, but he let it go, nodding as he got up to grab a drink. Wonwoo exhaled in relief. The truth was, he hadn't been able to see the choreography cues clearly for days. During rehearsals, he relied on muscle memory, following the others' movements as best as he could. But the more he squinted, the more the strain built up. He was starting to get migraines from it, and he feared that at any moment, the blurriness would overwhelm him.
As the time for their performance drew closer, the group gathered in a huddle. S.Coups, their leader, gave them a final pep talk, his usual mix of encouragement and light-hearted jokes lifting their spirits.
"Alright, let's give it everything we've got tonight!" S.Coups said, his hand held out in the middle. The other members piled their hands on top of his.
"For Carats!" they shouted in unison, their voices full of energy and determination.
Wonwoo joined in, though his voice was softer. He rubbed his temples as they broke apart, his head pounding from the pressure behind his eyes. He tried to brush it off. It's just nerves, he told himself. But deep down, he knew it wasn't just that.
As the concert began, the adrenaline of performing took over, and for a while, Wonwoo managed to keep up. The music, the cheers from the crowd, the lights—they all blurred together in a way that was both exhilarating and overwhelming. Wonwoo danced through the routines, his body moving out of habit more than conscious thought. He stuck close to his usual spots, relying on the familiarity of the choreography to guide him.
But halfway through the first set, things started to unravel.
During a particularly complicated sequence, the lights flared bright, and for a moment, everything in front of him turned to a haze. He blinked rapidly, trying to clear his vision, but the more he blinked, the worse it became. Panic started to creep in. His heart raced as he missed his cue by a beat, throwing off his timing just enough to make him stumble.
