Joshua had always found solace in music. The gentle strum of his guitar, the rhythm of his bandmates harmonizing during rehearsals, and the way melodies effortlessly poured from his soul into songs had always felt like second nature. But recently, something was different. When he played certain notes, vivid bursts of color would appear, like fireworks behind his eyelids. At first, it was a gentle cascade of blues, greens, and golds—soft, warm, and beautiful.
"Woah," he whispered to himself one evening while strumming his guitar in his room. A soft G major chord bloomed into a bright green in his mind, followed by shades of purple as he transitioned into a minor key. The colors swirled and shifted in time with the music, and for a moment, Joshua was entranced by the beauty of it all.
He thought it was a gift, something unique. The colors seemed to enhance his creativity, adding a layer of depth and emotion to the songs he was writing. With every note, a kaleidoscope of colors danced before his eyes, turning sound into a visual masterpiece. He felt like he was creating on an entirely new plane. He shared his excitement with the members, though not fully explaining what was happening.
"It's like I can see the music," Joshua told Woozi after a practice session. "Each note has a color, and when I sing, I feel like I'm painting with my voice."
Woozi looked intrigued but slightly concerned. "That sounds... intense. Are you okay with it? It's not too overwhelming?"
Joshua shook his head, smiling. "No, it's incredible. I've never felt so connected to music before."
At first, everything was fine, and Joshua's synesthesia seemed to enhance his artistry. But soon, the colors became brighter, louder, and more intrusive. What once was a beautiful experience turned chaotic. Instead of smooth transitions between hues, the colors began to clash violently. During a practice session with the group, the booming bass of a new track sent sharp, jagged flashes of red and orange through his mind, accompanied by a throbbing headache.
"Joshua, you alright?" S.Coups asked, noticing him wincing.
Joshua blinked, trying to shake off the discomfort. "Yeah, just a bit of a headache. I'll be fine."
But the truth was, he wasn't fine. Each note of the song now triggered overwhelming bursts of color that clashed in his mind, creating a sensory overload that left him reeling. He couldn't tell the others. How could he explain that what had once been a gift now felt like a curse?
He tried to push through. During rehearsals, he forced himself to focus, ignoring the pulsating colors that accompanied every sound. But it was getting harder and harder to keep up the facade.
A week later, Joshua found himself sitting alone in the studio late at night, strumming his guitar in an attempt to find some peace. The lights were dim, and the room was quiet except for the soft hum of the amplifier. But as soon as he began playing, the colors returned, stronger than ever. Bright yellows and oranges exploded in his vision, swirling into a dizzying whirlpool of sensations. His chest tightened, his heart pounding as anxiety began to creep in.
His fingers slipped off the strings as the colors grew overwhelming. His head throbbed, and he buried his face in his hands, trying to calm his racing thoughts.
The door creaked open, and Joshua heard footsteps approaching. "Shua?" It was Jeonghan. "I thought you'd still be here."
Joshua looked up, his eyes red from strain. "Hey," he whispered, his voice barely audible.
Jeonghan frowned, kneeling down beside him. "You don't look so good. What's going on?"
Joshua hesitated, his throat tightening as he struggled to find the words. He hadn't told anyone about the full extent of his synesthesia. The migraines. The anxiety. The way the colors had begun to feel like too much.
