It had been a long, grueling day for the members of ZEROBASEONE. Hours of filming an outdoor variety show had them battling against biting winds and overcast skies. Though each of them was tired, the weight of the day's exhaustion seemed to rest especially heavily on Yujin, the group's youngest member. Normally a lively ball of energy, Yujin's usual brightness seemed dimmed, but he kept flashing his familiar smile, laughing at his hyungs' jokes, and trying to keep up appearances. He didn't want them to worry, let alone think he was "the weak maknae."
As they finally piled into the van to head back to the dorm, Hanbin, ever the observant leader, noticed Yujin shivering slightly, pulling his jacket tighter around himself even in the warmth of the vehicle.
"Yujin-ah, are you feeling okay?" Hanbin asked gently, leaning closer.
Yujin flashed him a quick smile, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Yeah, I'm fine, hyung. Just a little tired," he replied, his voice slightly hoarse. He shifted in his seat, resting his head against the window as he stifled a yawn. He thought maybe he'd feel better with a good night's sleep.
The van ride was quiet, with the other members dozing off or zoning out in silence. Yujin sat between Jiwoong and Gyuvin, struggling to keep his eyes open as the steady hum of the engine lulled him closer to sleep. He felt a faint tickle in his throat, and his nose was starting to get stuffy, but he pushed it to the back of his mind. It was just a little cold, he told himself. No reason to make a fuss.
When they finally arrived back at the dorm, the members began shuffling to their rooms. Hanbin noticed Yujin trailing behind them, headed for the couch instead of his bed.
"Yujin-ah," Hanbin called, a gentle but insistent note in his voice. "Go get some rest in your room, alright?"
Yujin smiled faintly, nodding. "I will, hyung. Goodnight."
However, instead of heading to his room, Yujin curled up on the couch, scrolling aimlessly through his phone. He knew if he went to bed, his hyungs might notice the little coughs he'd been suppressing or his occasional sniffles. He didn't want to cause any concern, so he stayed out, trying to ignore the way his head felt increasingly heavy and his body achy.
The next morning, however, Yujin felt far worse. His throat was raw, his head pounded, and his nose was completely clogged. But as the group prepared to leave for practice, he told himself it was nothing. He could push through; he just didn't want to make his hyungs worry over something so trivial, especially when their week was already packed.
Practice began, and Yujin tried to focus, but his head was spinning, and his limbs felt sluggish. He missed a few steps in the choreography, stumbling over himself before quickly apologizing and pushing himself to work harder. He could tell the other members were exchanging glances but brushed it off, not wanting to appear as though he couldn't handle the same workload.
During a short break, Jiwoong, one of the oldest members, walked over and nudged him gently, offering a bottle of water. "Yujin-ah, drink some water. You're looking a bit pale," he said, his gaze soft with concern.
"Thanks, Jiwoong-hyung," Yujin replied, taking a quick sip before attempting to practice a section on his own. Jiwoong placed a hand on his shoulder, stopping him.
"Let's go over it together," Jiwoong offered. He didn't push Yujin to explain what was wrong, but his steady presence was calming.
Yujin nodded, though his usual cheer was subdued. He wanted to say he was fine, but his energy was fading fast, and he wasn't sure he'd make it through the entire session without collapsing.
As practice wore on, Yujin's symptoms worsened. By afternoon, his head was throbbing, and he felt as though his whole body was weighed down. He kept rubbing his arms, trying to stave off the shivers that had taken hold. During a water break, Taerae, who had been watching Yujin with increasing concern, finally noticed him shivering.
"Yujin-ah, are you cold?" Taerae asked softly, draping his jacket over Yujin's shoulders without waiting for an answer.
Yujin laughed weakly, looking up at Taerae with grateful eyes. "Just a little, but I'm okay, hyung."
Taerae wasn't convinced. He exchanged worried glances with Zhang Hao and Hanbin, then quietly pulled them aside. The three of them whispered to each other, nodding as they agreed: Yujin needed to rest, whether he liked it or not.
Soon, all the members had gathered, and they were stealing glances at Yujin, who was now sitting on the floor, leaning back against the wall with his eyes closed, looking utterly exhausted. Hanbin approached him, crouching down so he could speak softly.
"Yujin-ah," Hanbin said gently. "I think you should sit out the rest of practice. You don't look well."
Yujin opened his eyes, mustering up a shaky smile. "I can keep going, hyung. I don't want to slow everyone down."
Gunwook knelt beside him, shaking his head with a smile. "Yujin, you're not slowing us down. We'd rather you take care of yourself and rest."
The other members nodded in agreement, and Yujin finally gave in, feeling too tired to argue. He allowed them to guide him back to the dorm, though he still felt guilty for all the attention he was causing.
Once they were home, the members wasted no time in making Yujin as comfortable as possible. Ricky brought over a thick blanket, wrapping it around Yujin with an air of exaggerated importance. "You need warmth," he said seriously, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "This is my exclusive blanket, only for the best maknae."
Yujin chuckled, his face lighting up despite his exhaustion. "Thank you, Ricky-hyung."
A moment later, Matthew appeared with a steaming cup of ginger tea, blowing on it before handing it over. "Here, Yujin-ah. This will help soothe your throat," he said, his voice full of encouragement.
Yujin took the tea with a shy smile, touched by the small acts of kindness. "Thanks, hyung," he said, taking a sip and letting the warmth calm his sore throat.
Each member took turns checking on Yujin throughout the day, bringing small comforts to cheer him up. Jiwoong returned later with a small stack of Yujin's favorite comic books. "Rest up and enjoy these," he said, tousling Yujin's hair with a grin. "I'll be the best hyung and keep you entertained."
Zhang Hao followed suit, setting up a portable humidifier beside Yujin's bed. "This will help with your congestion," he explained, adjusting the settings with a caring smile.
Not to be outdone, Gyuvin plopped down next to Yujin with a mischievous grin. "I think I should be the best hyung because I brought you the ultimate treat," he said, holding out a bag of Yujin's favorite snacks.
The other members scoffed playfully, each one finding their own ways to make Yujin feel loved. Even Gunwook brought over a small pillow, arranging it behind Yujin's head and jokingly claiming that he was "the best at creating cozy vibes."
As the day went on, the members continued to fuss over Yujin, doing their best to outshine each other in their roles as his caretakers. Despite his initial reluctance, Yujin found himself laughing and smiling, warmed not just by their attentiveness but by the genuine love that each of them showed in their own way.
By evening, Hanbin stopped by one last time, his tone gentle but firm as he knelt beside Yujin's bed. "Promise me you'll rest tomorrow, Yujin-ah. We all want you to get better," he said, patting Yujin's shoulder with a caring smile.
Yujin nodded, his heart full. "I will, hyung. Thank you... all of you," he whispered, his eyes growing heavy with the weight of both his illness and the comfort of being surrounded by his hyungs.
As he drifted into a peaceful sleep, he knew he didn't have to shoulder his burdens alone. He was in good hands, and for the first time in a long while, he felt safe letting himself be vulnerable.
