Jen's POV (later that night)

Tossing and turning, tossing and turning that's all I've been doing for the past hour and a half. Unable to be pulled under by sleep. I turn to my side and read the lock screen of my phone two-thirty. Great, I think to myself as I climb out from under the covers and pull on my sweatshirt that was lying conveniently at the end of the bed.

Walking downstairs is a gruelling process but I get through it knowing there will be a reward of a glass of water at the end.

I pass through the hall and into the living room, twisting the bottom of my sweatshirt between my thumbs as I walk into the living room, I walk through the archway between the hall and living room, being met by Katie sitting on the couch, leaning forward looking down at the floor.

"Couldn't sleep?" I ask in a groggy tone as I draw closer.

"Not a wink," She sighs and sits back on the couch.

"Head ache?" I question and sit down beside her.

"Nah, just..." She sighs back unable to find words.

"I don't know," She whispers slightly, shaking her head.

"You can tell me," I encourage.

"I know I just... I actually don't know," she responds.

"Well, I'm here for when you do," I smile and place my hand on her right knee squeezing slightly not pressing her for a further explanation.

"Thanks," she smiles softly and wraps her hand in mine.

"Anyway, what's up with you?" She changes the subject as she squeezes my hand and releases it.

"Same boat," I nod to her.

"Can't sleep," I nod again.

"Do you even want to?" She asks me with a cocked eyebrow. What a weird question.

"Yeah, why wouldn't I?" I chuckle back curiously.

"I don't know I guess I thought you wouldn't want to." She shrugs and looks away towards the tv.

"Wanna watch a bit?" I suggest tilting my head towards the tv suggestively.

"Yeah sure it ain't gonna kill us." She shrugs back and lifts her legs up onto my lap so that they are lying across me.

"You just make yourself comfortable," I say sarcastically.

"Awk thanks, Jen I will," She chuckles back sarcastically, giving me a glint of the old her in the corner of her eye.

In response, I smile and pick up the remote turning on the tv.

"What you wanna watch?" I ask her while casting my eyes between her and the tv screen.

"I don't mind you pick," She replies.

"Okay," I sigh and pick something to watch.

The next morning

Last night was quite relaxing, it helped put my mind at ease. Katie seemed a bit more herself than she was during the day yesterday, she had taken in a lot of information and was processing it so I'm sure that now she has had a night of sleep she'll be a lot more herself. I had my publicist cancel all my appointments for the next two weeks and had her discuss changing my filming schedule for Red Sparrow so that I can stay till Katie's fully healed. I'm gonna leave Scarlett with Katie for the few weeks that I'm gone so that they can bond and also Katie is sixteen now so it's fine. She's taking her driving test in a week and she definitely won't fail, she's a better driver than me already.

"I was thinking we could go out in the car today?" I suggest to Katie as she sits down across the kitchen island from me.

"Yeah sure, which one though?" She asks me with a cheeky grin.

"Do I have dumb ass written across my forehead?" I ask her with a raised eyebrow.

In response, she squints and looks at my forehead then down at my hand and picks it up then points to my tattoo.

"Not on your forehead but it is written here." She grins back holding in a laugh.

"Ha ha very funny," I reply in a blank unamused tone causing her to laugh.

"We still ain't taking the GTS," I chuckle at her.

"Fine," She groans back.

"Want to go now or wait a while?" I ask her as I sip at my coffee.

"Your call," She smiles back.

"Okay well... I think... Now cause then we can get back and relax." I tell her as I get up and pour the remainder of my coffee into the sink.

"Okay sounds good," She nods and gets up with a small struggle, due to her screwed up leg. I can see the agitation and small amount of pain written on her face but I choose to leave her alone even though I hate seeing her this way, I know she hates being babied.

"I'll get Scarlett," I tell her as I walk out, not wanting to see her struggle anymore. As I walk through the hall and up the stairs I feel a small tear slip from my eye which I wipe away as I turn the handle to Scarlett's bedroom door.

"Hey Squirt," I smile when I see her, sitting on the floor with Huggy and some other stuffed animals that I'm sure she has names for.

"Hi, Mommy," She looks up and smiles then continues playing.

"You need to come with us," I tell her as I crouch down beside her.

"Can Huggy come?" She asks holding him up to me making me chuckle slightly.

"Yeah, he can come," I giggle back and lift her up as she wraps her arms around my neck and clutches Huggy in her tiny little hands.

"Where are we going?" She asks as we walk down the stairs and Katie comes out of the living room, walking across the hall and meets us in the middle at the front door.

"For a drive," I tell her as we walk out the door.

Once we left the house Katie seemed even better than earlier, a lot more contempt and happy. Then the worst possible thing happened to destroy that little glimmer of hope I had.

"Katie what happened at the four-wheeling trail? Why were you in hospital?" I hear someone shout as we wait patiently for a red light to change.

"Just ignore it," I tell her as I watch her face sink and flatten into a pool of confusion and sadness, all because of one question.
