Stage II heart failure. That's what the doctors called it. In less flashy terms, it meant that you had time, which came as a surprise to you. The doctors told you that with medication the process could be slowed, but it couldn't be stopped.

"I must say young lady, I'm quite impressed at how well you've taken care of your heart. A normal person would need a transplant immediately, but you seem to have some time before then." The doctor praised as he flipped through your forms.

"Other than that I'm fine, right? I can leave?" You asked impatiently.

"I believe so, just make sure you don't push yourself. Your leg isn't healed well yet. Use a wheelchair or crutches if you must move around. Other than that, you seem alright enough to return home."

"Yes! Now all I have to do is meet with Mickey, then I can go home!" You sighed happily.

"Do you live alone?" The doctor asked.

"Yeah, why?"

"That won't do. You should find someone to stay with, or have someone stay with you. You're going to need help."

"You can stay at my place." Shinichi volunteered.

"Like hell I will!" You protested.

"Why?" Shinichi asked, hurt by your adamant refusal.

"He's meaning I'll need help getting up and down." You tried to avoid stating specifics.

"So?"

You sighed. "Judo, that means in and out of the bathroom, in and out of clothes, etc. I don't want you anywhere near me in those situations." Shinichi blushed and took an extreme interest in his shoes.

"Then where will you go?" The doctor asked.

"I have someone in mind." You replied, not willing to give any more information than that.

"Alright, if you're sure. I could ask Ran for you if need be." Shinichi said.

"I'll be fine!" You stated, waving him off. "I'm going home!" You chuckled as you hobbled your way out of the little hospital room.

"Do you need any help?" Shinichi called after you.

"I'm fine, Judo! I'll call you if I need you!" You shouted over your shoulder as you beelined it for the exit.

After several minutes of hobbling you stopped to take a breath. You didn't live far from the hospital, but you wanted to get as far from Shinichi (Kaito too, but God only knows where he was) as you could. You needed to be alone, something they hadn't let happen.

When you finally made it to your apartment you unlocked the door and quickly closed it behind you. Your apartment was nothing to be impressed with. It had three "rooms" : the main room, bathroom, and wall closet. It was basically a glorified dorm room, but it was all you had. The carpet was stained and burned, the walls were full of holes, and the lone pair of windows had holes in them.

You slowly slid down the paint peeled door, and closed your eyes. Tears rolled down your cheeks and splashed on your pants. Now that you were completely alone, you couldn't hold them back anymore. You were in so much pain, and so scared that you weren't sure which was causing the tears to fall.

You sat there and cried until the tears would no longer come. For thirteen years you held back the tears, held back the emotions, and now they were all crashing down upon you with a vengeance. The thirteen year nightmare was finally over.

You pulled yourself together and grabbed a duffle bag that you could carry your wallet, and such in, then called Mcguire on the number he had given you.

"Hello, Inspector Mcguire? It's (Y/N). You told me to call when I was well enough to talk." You said, resisting the urge to call him Mickey.

"Oh, (Y/N), glad you're feeling better. If you want I can send a black and white to give you a ride to the station." Mcguire offered.

"I'd appreciate that. I'll meet him outside the restaurant on 9th. I believe it's called Morsels Bistro."

"Alright, they'll meet you there in 10 minutes." Mcguire stated.

"Thanks." You said as you hung up the phone. You slowly got to your feet and splashed some water on your face in the little bathroom sink before pulling on a new pair of clothes (which was an absolute pain in the butt), and heading out again. You walked to the bistro and sat at one of the many outdoor tables to wait. Within minutes the officer pulled up to the curb and helped you into the car. You rode in silence, and arrived at the station quickly.

You were led to a small conference room, where Mcguire joined you. "Hello Inspector." You said, shaking the beefy officer's hand.

"I'm sorry to bring you out here when you are still recuperating, but we need some answers. Kudo said he didn't know anything, but I feel like he didn't want to tell me." Mcguire looked at you accusingly.

"Sorry about that, I made him promise to keep everything a secret." You apologized.

"So, why don't you fill in the blanks for me. Let's start with your last name."

"My last name is Inukai."

"That name's familiar." Mcguire started, the wheels in his head turning.

"I'm the daughter of Kagome and Raymond Inukai, the last victims of the Blood Rose Butcher." You sighed.

"What?!" Mcguire shouted in shock. "But we thought you'd been taken by the Butcher!"

"Yeah, that's what I've been told. In reality, I managed to escape. I've been trying to hide for the past thirteen years. I even changed my last name so I could go to school." You sighed, it felt weird telling Mcguire all of this, but it would help keep that psycho in prison.

"Takagi!" Mcguire shouted over his shoulder.

"Yes, sir?!" Officer Takagi answered as he entered the conference room. "Bring us some food and drinks. We're going to be here for a while." Mcguire stated.

You told Mcguire everything about your interactions with the Butcher. You told him what had happened when you were a child, how he had found you again, and what had happened after he'd brought you to his workshop. Ending it all with how Shinichi had come to save you, leaving out all the details involving Kaito and your alter ego.

After two hours, a foot-long sub, and a jug of water, you finally finished. Mcguire pulled you to the side and handed you a card with the number of a lawyer on it. "You should give her a call, she's Ran Mouri's mother. She should be able to help you figure out the legal side of things." Mcguire explained.

"Legal side?"

"You were missing for years, with how much blood was at the scene and who was thought to have taken you, you were presumed dead." Mcguire explained.

Your head swam as you left the station and hobbled home on your metal crutches, the afternoon sun at your back. The conversation with Mcguire had once again reopened the metaphorical wound on your heart and mind, making you raw and tense. You were a good way from the station when you snapped. Someone was dragging a bag of garbage into an alley, a loud metallic scraping noise coming from the bag.

You felt your heart leap into your chest, and you suddenly couldn't breathe. Images flashed through your mind; your father bound and gagged being dragged down the hall, the cruel face of the Butcher as he sharpened his knife, and blood everywhere. You abandoned your crutches, stumbled into an alley, and collapsed. You curled up into a ball and whimpered, closing your eyes to hide the blood that soaked your surroundings.

"Hey." Someone whispered and touched your shoulder.

You screamed and tried to crawl away from the voice, fear clouding your senses. A pair of hands wrapped around your shoulders, and you started to sob the fear breaking you. The hands pulled you close to a warm body, and held you close, stroking your head. In between sobs you could hear the voice whispering, but you could only make out two words,

"I'm here."
