"So, this is the Mouri Detective Agency." The figure at the door said. He wore a bluish green billed baseball hat, with a SAX logo on a cream background, whatever that stood for. He had on a green jacket over a black t-shirt, a pair of blue jeans, and a blue bag that read Victory over his shoulder.
"Yeah, and we're busy, so unless you need something leave." Kogoro grumbled, still hungover from last night.
"I'm looking for someone, and word on the street is he's connected to this place." The mysterious boy stated. Yes, boy. Now that you got a good look at him you could tell he was around the same age as Ran.
"Who're you looking for?" Ran inquired.
"Shinichi Kudo." He replied. You stifled a laugh when you saw how shocked Conan looked. "I heard his girlfriend was the daughter of Mouri Kogoro." It was your turn to look shocked.
"Oh, no. You've got it all wrong! Shinichi and I are just childhood friends. He's like a brother to me." Ran chuckled, as she corrected him.
"I think it's about time you give us your name, Spikey Head." You glowered up at the boy.
"S-spikey Head?"
"Yeah, you've got a major hair spike. If you don't like it, then give me a name to work with."
"You're pretty level headed for a little kid." The stranger complimented, as he squatted down to look at you. "The name is Heiji Hattori, but you can just call me Heiji. It's nice to meet you..." He gave you a wide toothy smile, wanting your name.
"So, Spikey, where did you come from?" You asked, returning the boy's smile with a smirk. "You clearly aren't from around here."
"What makes you say that?" He asked.
"You have a duffel bag, presumably filled with clothes and such, based on the shape and weight. You seem to be a little tense, maybe suspicious, since this is unfamiliar ground. Lastly, you have a map of the city in your back right pocket." You rambled off the deduction as if it was second nature. Conan glared at you, worried that you would blow your cover, but you didn't care. "That's all basic observation, Spikey Head, but I shouldn't have to tell you that." You grinned knowingly.
"You're a smart kid, but I'm not sure what makes you think I would know all that." Heiji smiled, testing you now.
"You're a detective, right? You scanned the entire room as soon as you opened the door. Even now, your eyes occasionally wander around to little details. You're not with the police though. You hold yourself in a cocky, free-spirited sort of way, that seems more at home in the private detective section. You're young though, maybe 17, so I doubt you have a successful agency, which makes me assume you're like Kudo, a teenage detective, just getting into the swing of things." You rattled off the observations that had taken less than a minute for you to process.
"Don't be rude." Ran said, pulling you towards her. "Sorry, she sometimes gets a little carried away."
"Don't apologize, she was spot on." Heiji chuckled. "It's quite impressive. You could make a great detective someday, but will you stop calling me Spikey Head? It's Heiji."
"Why would I do that, Spikey Head?"
"Cause, I have a name. Why do you insist on calling me Spikey Head?"
"Other than the obvious?" You smiled, pointing at his hair. "It unsettles you. Every time I say it, I learn something new about you. You get unsettled, and, in doing so, let your guard down a little."
"That's enough, he didn't come here to play." Ran chastised.
"I'm fine, this is actually quite enjoyable. So, what else have you figured out, little detective?"
"You're a swordsman, and I'd wager you're pretty good too. I'd guess you are, or were, in the kendo club at school at some point. Based on that, and my earlier deductions, I can be certain that you are from Osaka. You are, in all likelihood, the Great Detective of the West. Son of the Osaka chief of police Martin Hattori." You yawned. "Now I'm bored." You sighed.
"Spot on, on all points. You continue to impress, kid. What's your name?" Heiji laughed.
"I'll give you my name when you don't bore me." You stated bluntly.
Heiji laughed again. "It's a deal then. I accept your challenge." Heiji returned his attention to his objective. "As I was saying earlier, I'm looking for Kudo. You wouldn't happen to know where he is, would you?"
"Oh, he's just working on some cases." Conan chuckled nervously.
"How do you know that little man?" Heiji turned to face Conan.
"Cause I told him. I've talked to Shinichi a few times since he left. He's just too busy to come home." You cut in.
"When you talk, who does he talk about?" Heiji asked.
"That's a given, he's a cocky teenage detective. He asks how everyone is, but always ends up talking about himself." You sighed, catching on to Heiji.
"If you're some big shot detective back in Osaka, why would you come all the way out here to see Kudo?" Kogoro asked.
"I want to see just how good he is. I want to know if he's capable of keeping up with me."
"You two are like twins, so cocky it's painful to watch." You mumbled. Conan shot you an angry look, but you just smiled.
"He's really good you know." Conan stated. Before Heiji could respond, Conan started sneezing up a storm.
"Oh, no! I forgot about your medicine." Ran gasped.
"Don't worry about it, I've got something that should clear it right up." Heiji said. He dropped his bag onto the desk, and pulled out a bottle wrapped in paper. He poured a glass, and offered it to you. "You're starting to come down with something, right? Why don't you have some too?"
"I'm good. I don't like to drink. Besides, I'm not as much of a pansy as Conan is. A little cold won't slow me down."
"Says the girl that can barely walk on her own." Conan grumbled. He took the glass from Heiji, and downed it in one shot.
Have fun with that, baka. You chuckled to yourself. Within moments Conan was red in the face, and swaying.
Ran ran to his side, and took the glass from him. "What did you give him?"
"It's baijiu, or white liquor." You sighed.
"How do you know that?" Ran asked.
"When he offered me some. I could tell by the smell."
"How would you know what liquor smells like?" Heiji asked with a bemused smile.
"I've been around. I wasn't always a squatter at a two-bit detective agency."
"Two bit! Why you little brat!" Kogoro barked.
"Calm down, dad. I'm sure she didn't mean it like that." Ran soothed her father's wounded pride.
"I can't wait until a case comes in. Kudo or no Kudo, this will be fun." Heiji said with a childish grin.
