You shot up from your sleep, panting. The sheets of your cot were soaked in sweat, as were the clothes you'd fallen asleep in. You tried to slow your breathing, but nothing you did helped. You grabbed your phone, and checked the time. 3:39 a.m. You couldn't stop the tremor from your body, the anxiety tearing at your insides. Glancing over to Ran, you pushed yourself up from your cot, and slipped out.
With practiced silence, you crossed the living room, and crept into the boys room. Kogoro snored loudly on his bed, while Conan slept silently on his cot. You approached the sleeping boy, stretched out a hand to shake him, but froze. Your hand trembled just above his shoulder, yet you couldn't bring yourself to wake him. You wanted nothing more than to wake him, to curl up beside him, and let the fear fade from your heart, but he would know something was wrong if you did.
You clenched your teeth, before wrenching yourself from the boy's side. Every ounce of your heart wanted to stay by his side, but your mind knew better. You grabbed your bag, and slipped out the front door. You skipped down the stairs two at a time, before you started off. It was reckless, and stupid, and immature of you. However, despite the dangers, the idea of being trapped in the apartment for a moment longer terrified you. You felt the need, the compulsion to move. It was your oldest habit, and kicking it wasn't an easy thing. You hailed the first taxi you encountered, and climbed in the back seat.
"Where to?" The cab driver inquired.
"Beika Town District 1, Block 7." You replied with the first address that popped into your mind.
The small man nodded, before turning his attention to the road. The ride was silent, save for the hum of the engine, and the whir of the tires on the asphalt. After a long while, the cab driver pulled up to the curb, and let you out. You paid the man, and he took off down the road in search of his next fair.
You weren't sure why you'd picked this location out of all the ones in your mind. Maybe it was nostalgia, maybe it was your childish desires, maybe it was your feeble attempt to escape reality. Whatever the case, you felt nervous as you stared up at the towering steeple of the old church.
Well, I'm here now... I might as well peak inside. You thought to yourself, before ascending the steps.
You quietly let yourself into the church (let yourself in, of course, referring to picking the lock), and locked the door behind you once more. You hadn't gotten more than a few feet inside, when a flashlight beam shone down on you. You froze, realizing you'd been completely busted, and slowly looked up to the source of the light.
"Now then, what might you be doing here at this hour?" The quivering voice of Mother Superior echoed through the old vestibule.
"I-I'm sorry, I don't know what I was thinking... I'll leave." You quickly apologized, and began to back up towards the door.
Mother Superior approached you, her black and white habit gently brushing against the wooden floor. "Nonsense, you've done nothing wrong. This is a home for any lonely kit that might stumble in."
You hesitated at her words. "Kit?"
The weathered woman let out an airy chuckle. "That's what the children call themselves. I suppose I've picked up the habit." She looked down on you, her eyes kind and gentle. "You can spend the rest of the night here, if you'd like. If you wish to leave in the morning, we won't stop you, but you look like you could use some rest."
"I'd love too, but..." You started.
The door behind Mother Superior was pushed open, and one of the older girls emerged. She was around ten years old, with startling red hair. She'd been in the orphanage for two years now. Her mom was from Ireland, while her dad was Japanese. From what she'd told them, her parents left for work together one day, and just never came home.
