I'm here.

Those two words filled your mind, and slowly your sobs subsided into whimpers. You shook like a leaf, but the arms held you tight. The arms weren't restricting like the bars of a cage, on the contrary, they were gentle like the sheltering limbs of a tree. You didn't know who it was that held you, but you slowly felt your heart slow down.

"I'm right here. You're safe, I won't let anyone hurt you. I promise." The voice whispered soothingly. One of the arms unwrapped from around you, and you could hear the voice whispering. "Hey, Jii can you come pick me up."

After nearly twenty minutes, the arms lifted you up, tucking you into the warm chest. The arms carried you and held you close as they slid into a car, never once releasing you. Between the rhythmic hum of the car, and the comforting warmth, you slowly drifted off to sleep.

You woke up in a bed, wrapped in warm blankets. You groggily sat up to see Kaito asleep on the floor, his back propped against the wall beneath the window. You pulled your knees up to your chest, and tugged the blankets up over your head, like a child. "Why won't they just go away? Why does it all have to hurt so much? I'm scared, and I just want it to stop!" You whimpered to yourself. You hid under the blankets, your body still shaking gently. After several minutes, you finally uncovered your face, and, to your surprise, Kaito was looking up at you.

"How long have you been awake?" You croaked.

"Long enough." He replied softly as he got up, walked over, and sat at the bottom of the bed. "I won't ask you to tell me anything, I'm just here to take care of you."

Shinichi had said similar things, but you had always fought the tears. This time though, you weren't ready, and your undefended wall crumbled. Before you knew what was happening, the tears started. "I'm so scared." The words slipped past your unexpected lips, and, like your tears, they wouldn't stop flowing. "I keep trying to hide my fear, but I don't know how much more I can take. I'm pathetic, I can't even control my own emotions!" You growled the last part.

"Don't say that, you shouldn't have to keep that bottled up." Kaito protested.

"I feel like a glass that's started overflowing. I tried to forget everything, so now that it's all resurfaced I don't know what to do."

"I don't think you ever dealt with what happened to you as a kid." Kaito whispered softly.

"How was I supposed to deal with it?" You muttered.

"I'm not sure, but you should start by letting your emotions loose a little." Kaito stated.

You didn't answer, instead you changed the subject. "Can I see the Kid Cave?" You said with a smile.

Kaito chuckled and helped you to your feet, before leading you to a large picture of his father, and pushing past it.

The Kid Cave was quite impressive. There were displays for his costume, and all his little trinkets, there was even a revolving car port. "What do you think?"

"This place is awesome! Your pops was great at making secret bases!" You chuckled.

"Right! When I stumbled across this place I couldn't believe it! Even from the grave my old man manages to impress me." Kaito grinned.

"It's official, I need to make my own secret base. I think I'd call it The Den."

"The Den?"

"Yeah, that way I can call it The Fox Den or The Wolf Den, depending on which mask I wear." You smirked.

"Why don't you make one? You've stolen enough expensive things, and gotten enough money from people to build hundreds of secret bases."

"I don't keep any of it, well any of the money."

"And what about the stuff you didn't return?"

"I don't sell any of it. I store it for a few years, then I give it to a museum or art gallery."

"You make no sense." Kaito chuckled. "But, this reminds me." He started as he walked over to a table and grabbed a little box wrapped in plain brown paper. He handed the box to you and smiled. "Happy early birthday!"

"H-how did you know?" You stammered as you grabbed the little box.

"I borrowed a lab coat and peaked at your forms. Your birthday is tomorrow, right? March 7th. That's a real luck filled birth date." Kaito grinned.

"I wish I felt the same way."

"Why didn't you tell us?!"

"Cause I don't see a reason to celebrate it."

"Nonsense! That changes starting today! Now, open your present!" Kaito directed.

You sighed and turned your attention to the small package. "What, no flashy wrapping paper?" You chuckled as you peeled back the plain paper. As soon as you lifted the lid of the little box, sprinklers and confetti popped out with a 'tada' sound effect. You looked at Kaito with a raised eyebrow. He was grinning like a little kid.

You shook your head with a chuckle and returned to the box. Inside was a small glass dove on a silver chain. You pulled it out, and held it up. "I love it!"

"I know it's not as fancy as the jewelry you are used to..." Kaito mumbled.

"Bakaito!" You chuckled. Kaito looked shocked at the all too familiar nickname, confusion written on his face. "I love it, it's beautiful. This is the first necklace I've ever owned." You smiled, your eyes tearing up. You couldn't be happier with the first gift you'd gotten in thirteen years.

That's all I've got for today. Hope you enjoyed it!
