"Please, keep asking all your little questions! It would make me very happy to watch your look of shock intensify." You grin at the high school detective.

"What about the hair? How did you know it wasn't a woman's hair?" Shinichi quizzed.

"An educated assumption. The victim wasn't stabbed in the back, which makes me think that the killer had to feel confident enough in his own strength to face him head on. Based on that it was simple to deduce that it was a man, not a woman." You say, muffling a yawn.

"And what about the beer and cigarettes. How did you know it wasn't just some random person?"

You sigh, growing quickly bored with the twenty questions. "Who stands in one place and smokes about twenty-seven cigarettes and a twelve pack of beer? The answer, someone waiting for something, or in this case someone. They had to have come from either the killer or the victim, based on the fact that those streets get cleaned daily. They keep that street cleaned because it's the tourist district, they want to leave a good impression. I didn't see any evidence of heavy drinking or smoking on the victim, so that left the killer. Oh, and before you ask I knew the killer knew the victim. Based on the wounds the first stab went up under the ribcage, killing the victim instantly as it pierced his heart. This was evident based on the massive amounts of blood around that particular wound, while all the other wounds had very small amounts of blood because the heart was no longer pimping it. Now the question is, who kills a man then continues to stab him? It ruled out a robbery, because a robber would have tried to get out fast. The killer kept stabbing the victim, long after he was deceased, making this a rage killing, and most probably a revenge killing. Narrowing it down from there was child's play."

Shinichi looked at you, mildly impressed. "That doesn't excuse your behavior."

"What are you, my mother?" You mumble under your breath.

"Your luck is going to run out one of these days! Just turn yourself in! You're going to get yourself killed! If you worked with the police you wouldn't have to be so reckless!" Shinichi growled.

"Nag at me all you want. It won't change my mind. I'm bored, so I'm leaving." You grumble as you run and leap across the rooftops.

-------------------------------------------------------

You climb down from a roof a mile or so from the killer's house, and make your way towards Granny's place. You drop off your pack in the storage trailer, and climb up into the old abandoned factory. You decide to change out of your costume inside the factory, knowing that Granny's little two-bedroom house would be full. You stash the costume inside an empty oil drum, and head to your tiny apartment a few blocks away.

"I'm beat." You mumble to yourself as you walk along the dimly lit sidewalk.

"Hey sweetheart, whatcha doin out here all alone?"

Great, just what I need. You think to yourself with an inaudible sigh. You look up to face the men, and hesitate. There were nine of them, and they were bulky, like football players. Some of them had snuck up behind you. You growl under your breath, knowing this was gonna hurt.

The men formed a loose semicircle around you, blocking your escape routes. "What do you want?" You hissed.

"Don't be so mean, we just want to have some fun!"

"Leave me alone. I just want to go home, so get out of my way."

One of the men grabbed your arms, and pulled you towards him. You struggled to pull your arm away, but the man had a vice like grip.

Guess I have no choice. You turned to the man holding your arm and pulled back your leg, ready to kick with all your might. You were about to release a powerful kick when someone grabbed you from behind.

The man who grabbed you held both your arms behind your back with one of his, and fixed his other hand around your neck. "Why don't you take a nice little nap." The man hissed as he tightened his grip on your throat.

Nothing could have prepared you for the feeling of suffocation. Your whole body screamed for air, but the man's cruel grip forbade your body the luxury. Slowly your vision began to darken, and you cursed your own weakness. Despite all your training, and all your work, you still weren't strong enough!

You were about to lose consciousness when an empty beer can slammed into the face over your shoulder. You fell to the ground gasping and coughing. "Who the hell did that?" One of the men shouted.

"How about you jerks just give up, and step away from the girl?" A familiar voice said. Your vision was still black, your lungs struggling to gather each breath.

"Pummel the punk!" One of the men shouted.

You did your best to focus, as you tried to hear what was happening. You heard shouts and grunts, then silence. You wanted to move, to look, to do anything, but your consciousness was quickly slipping.

You heard someone groan, as he picked you up, one hand under your knees and the other around your shoulders. You felt fear clutching at your heart. You couldn't help it. There was nothing worse than being unable to protect yourself.

Why am I still so weak!? I'll never be able to avenge them like this! You thought as you lost consciousness.

-------------------------------------------------------

You opened your eyes, and winced. You felt like your head was going to explode. "Wh...where...?" You croaked, not expecting to be answered.

"You're finally awake I see." A voice called from the corner of the room.

You tried to move away from the voice, and fell off the edge of the bed you were in. "Who's there?" You gasped as you clutched your pounding head.

"Take it easy! You're safe!" The person in the corner stepped towards you worriedly.

"Ju...Shinichi?" You stuttered, nearly calling him by his nickname.

"Yeah, you're the sick girl that's in my class... what's your name again?"

"(Y/N) A-Akahoshi." You stuttered, assuming the role of the shy, sickly, girl once again.

"That's right!" Shinichi snapped his fingers, remembering.

"W-where am I?"

"This is Dr.Agasa's place. He's my neighbor. After I got those guys away from you, I brought you here so the Doc could check on you."

You gasped, noticing the bandages on Shinichi's forehead and arm, and his broken lip. "I-I'm sorry. You got hurt because of me."

"Don't worry about it!" Shinichi chuckled as he rubbed the back of his head. "These are just scratches, and besides it wasn't your fault! It's the fault of those jerks who attacked you!"

"Still..."

"I said don't worry about it! Now, how are you feeling?" Shinichi asked, worry in his eyes.

"I'll be fine. I'm just glad you walked by when you did."

"I've been working on a case for quite some time now, and I was out looking for the suspect when I saw you."

"Well, you have my thanks anyways. What does the suspect you're searching for look like? Maybe I saw them."

"Well... it's a secret, but I think I can trust you. The person I'm looking for is a bit of an odd duck. He wears solid black clothes, a black hooded cloak, and a red and black fox mask." Shinichi said, recalling the suspect's appearance.

Great, he's been searching for me. You thought to yourself, a bead of sweat on your forehead. "How strange. Sorry, I haven't seen anyone like that."

"Don't worry about it, I doubt he went that way in the first place." Shinichi giggled.

"I should be going. I've imposed upon you for long enough. Besides, school will be starting soon."

"You can't go to school! You are in no condition! Just stay here for now. I'll tell the school that you're home sick, so you just rest up!" Shinichi smiled as he slung his bag over his shoulder, and headed out the door.
