"You've been lying this whole time! There's no way that (Y/N) is dead! I just saw her a few hours ago when we went..." Conan trailed off, his expression growing sad. "Tell me the truth."

Your heart broke at the boy's crushed expression, and you could no longer keep up the act. "To the world, she is dead."

"What does that even mean?!"

"The person who was acting as her guardian was given instructions. If she didn't check in every night, they were to go under the assumption that she was dead, and notify everyone accordingly." You started. You didn't want to tell him it was you. It wasn't out of spite, but more out of worry and fear. From your eyes, you had started over at step one. It was pretty clear that if the guys in black found out the poison hadn't worked they would come back to finish the job. It was just a repeat of what had happened to you in the past, except instead of one deranged murderer you were dealing with two trained killers. Your flight instinct once again kicked in, stopping you from telling the worried boy the truth, no matter how much it hurt to see him like that. "I'm sorry, but for now, that's all I can tell you."

"Don't say that! You know something, so spill it!" Conan shouted.

"I know a lot of things. For example, I know your name isn't Conan. You are Shinichi Kudo, famous high school detective. You were turned into a little kid by a poison slipped to you by two guys in black. I can't tell you anything about (Y/N) for the same reason you won't tell Ran who you are, your own safety."

"Dammit, tell me! If I find out you or anyone else did anything to her, I swear..."

"You'll what? Kill me? Try all you want. It won't help anybody."

Conan fell silent and looked down at his feet blankly. "It has to be a lie." You heard his almost inaudible whisper.

You couldn't take it. You turned and ran out of the room, and bolted straight out the door, ignoring the shouts that followed you. You ran as far as you could, then you dropped to your knees, and tried to fight the tears that threatened to spill. "I'm sorry Shinichi." You whispered. "I-I don't want you to get hurt anymore because of me."

After several minutes, you punched the ground and got to your feet again. You walked towards The Mouri Detective Agency, and hid in an adjacent alley. After several minutes Conan and Ran showed up, they were about to go up the stairs when bumbling detective Mouri Kogoro tumbled down the stairs and ran for a cab, shouting something about a case, and a man in black. Realizing the slimness of the possibility you hailed your own taxi. You told the driver to follow Kogoro's taxi. I doubt this case is related to the guys who did this to Shinichi and I, but worst case-scenario I'll have something to take my mind off of everything.

When the taxi came to a stop you pulled out your emergency money that you hid in a secret pocket in your pants, and snuck inside the yard of the fenced (well, more walled) manor. You quickly observed the situation, and dove into a bush. They were saying something about a kidnapping of a little girl, but you were having a hard time hearing. Conan was there, bouncing a ball around like he did (as Shinichi) when he was thinking. The ball bounced away from him and rolled away. He went to retrieve it, and fell back as a big Doberman leapt out of the bush and started barking. A lot of words were exchanged, but you were too far away to hear them (you didn't want any chance of Conan spotting you). Before anyone else could react, Conan leapt on the dog and raced off.

Being the worrywart, you were, you stole the missing girl's tricycle (sorry, not sorry), and raced after him. You made sure to keep your distance as he raced around the city, trying to find the lost girl. After a while he stopped, him and the dog breathing heavily. He seemed to be struggling when he froze, fixated on something in the distance. "Hold on, it's possible." He muttered as he climbed back onto the poor dog.

You kept following him at a distance, until he finally came to a stop at Franklin Junior High. He and the dog ran towards one of the school's outer buildings. They dog leapt at someone, and Conan ran in. You walked as quickly, and quietly, as you could until you were standing just outside the door. You didn't want to interfere if you didn't have to, but, of course, you had to.

The big dog ran out of the building, yelping, and you knew something was wrong. You peaked around the door to see Conan get thrown into a pile of soccer balls by the kidnapper. The boy desperately kicked one of the soccer balls, but the kidnapper easily caught the ball. You weren't sure what was happening, but you ran in. You ran towards Conan, as the kidnapper ran towards him. The criminal (not seeing you) swung the bat at Conan. You shoved him down, as the bat connected with your back. You were thrown across the room, and crashed into the wall.

---------------------------------------------

I can't even kick a soccer ball anymore! Conan thought to himself in shock as the kidnapper ran towards him, baseball bat poised. He thought he was done for, but then he was forced to the ground, and a shadow passed in front of him. He looked up in time to see the homeless girl, from before, get struck in the back by the metal bat. The small girl slammed into the opposite, and fell to the ground with a sickening THUD.

The kidnapper turned back to face Conan, but the girl wasn't done yet. She leapt at the large man, only to receive a blow across the stomach. She slammed into a set of equipment filled boxed that crashed down on top of her. Conan looked at the pile in shock, as the girl shoved the heavy gear away, and once again staggered to her feet. "What are you doing? Get out of here and call for help!" Conan shouted at the beaten and bloody kid.

"I'm not going to leave you." She gasped, turning around to face the kidnapper. "I'm going to protect you, even if it kills me." With that, she once again leapt towards the bat wielding man. This time he caught her by the throat, and slammed her into the ground, trying to crush the life from her.

"Get away from her!" Conan shouted as he leapt on the hunched man's back. The man stood abruptly, and swiped the bat across his back. The bat slammed into Conan, who fell to the ground, cursing his inability to protect anyone.

The man turned on Conan with hatred in his eyes. He took a step towards him, but stopped. The half dead girl was now clinging on to his leg, her breathing heavy and ragged. "Don't touch J-Judo." She gasped.

Judo? Conan questioned, as he tried to stand.

"Get the hell off me!" The kidnapper cursed, and kicked her in the face, sending her flying once again. "I guess I'll have to deal with you first you little brat!" The kidnapper hissed as he raised the bat over his head. He brought the bat down, and Conan inadvertently closed his eyes. There was a THUNK followed by a confused gasp. Conan opened his eyes, and saw Ran standing between the kidnapper, and the wounded girl, the bat having slammed into her arm.

"Ran." Conan whispered softly, as the high school girl delivered several swift strikes to the kidnapper, who crashed to the floor unconscious. Man, she kicks ass. Conan thought as Ran released her fighting stance.

Ran immediately turned to the beaten girl she had shielded. "Rin, can you hear me? You're going to be alright, the police are here, you're safe." Ran whispered to the half unconscious girl. The girl tried to smile up at Ran, but seemed to find it difficult. Ran turned to Conan. "You watch her, I'm gonna go tell Inspector Mcguire to call an ambulance." Ran stated, sprinting from the room.

Conan turned to the bloody girl, confusion written on his face. "Just hang in there."
