We have hit 3K reads!!! I'm so happy, and so grateful to everyone who has read this story!
And, just so you guys know. The timeline is completely different in this story. I may use cases from before Haibara showed up, in the future, so I hope that won't be too confusing.
------------------------------------------------------
Conan jerked awake, nearly butting heads with Ran. "Hey, I was just about to wake you up." Ran whispered.
Conan looked at her red eyes, and felt like he himself would break down into tears. "Where's Rin?" He said, biting back the threatening tears.
Ran rubbed her red eyes, before answering. "She's okay." She whispered out the words.
Conan realized, with relief, that the tears weren't of sadness, but of relief and joy. "Can I go see her?" He asked, trying to stifle the overwhelming emotions.
"Yes." Ran nodded, a tired smile on her face. "You'll have to wear the hat and gown, and you can't stay for long."
Conan nodded, and hurriedly followed her. They wound deep into the bowels of the hospital, before Ran came to a stop in front of a door. The door was cracked, and voices could be heard from the inside. "Ai had to go home. She had a cold, so she can't come in. Dr. Agasa took her, and came back." Ran whispered, as she and Conan pulled the hat, mask, and gown on. "You can go in, just be quiet, and try to stay calm. We don't want to get her too riled." Ran explained, as she quietly pushed the door open.
Conan slipped into the room. The curtain was pulled partway, blocking most of the hospital bed from view. Kogoro and Dr. Agasa sat on either side of the bed, talking. Conan tentatively stepped around the curtain.
She was smiling. It wasn't her big bright smile, that made it seem like nothing could go wrong. Instead she'd donned her small smile; the smile she wore when she wasn't feeling well, but was still happy. Although it wasn't nearly as joyful of a smile, it still made the room feel warm, and comfortable. As soon as she noticed Conan, the smile faltered. She tried to maintain it, but the warm light in her eyes had faded. She met his eyes, and the smile completely fell from her face.
Conan felt as though someone had stabbed him in the heart, but he couldn't blame her. He'd hurt her. He'd made her feel pain that she never should have felt. The wordless question written on his face; How can I fix this?
--------------------------------------------------
You were talking to Kogoro and Dr. Agasa when Conan walked in. Your heart both fluttered, and stung. You tried to ignore him, and continue your talk with Dr. Agasa, but he stepped closer. You glanced in his direction, and your smile faltered. You tried to maintain it, but you couldn't control it when you met his eyes.
You shouldn't hold it against him, after all you couldn't blame him. So far, all the people who had gotten close to you ended up hurt, or worse. I shouldn't have done this. I should have just minded my own business. Why did I have to bring them into this?! You dropped your gaze to the white hospital sheets, and acted interested in a small black spot on the crisp fabric.
Dr. Agasa noticed your sudden change, and turned to see Conan. He cleared his throat uncomfortably. "Kogoro, why don't you, Ran, and I go get some food from the cafeteria?" Dr. Agasa called happily.
"What about Conan?" Ran asked.
"He's a responsible young man, he can keep Rin company." Dr. Agasa smiled as he led the father and daughter out of the room. Dammit, Doc! You silently cursed.
Conan uncomfortably climbed into the now vacant chair on the left side of your bed. The two of you sat there, the silence almost unbearable. "I'm sorry." He whispered the words finally.
"You don't have to apologize." You replied in an equally soft whisper. "I don't blame you. What you said was the truth." You fought back the tears that threatened to overflow from your eyes.
"No!" Conan shouted, startling you, and causing you to finally look up at the boy. "I didn't mean any of that." He insisted. His eyes had filled with tears, and some had started to slip down his face. "I don't think you're selfish, and you do have things to lose." He rambled. "You do so much to help people, even to the point of self sacrifice, and you do everything in your power to keep people from knowing how much you are hurting. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Please, it's fine if you never forgive me, just don't leave." His voice dropped back down to a weak whisper.
You returned your gaze to the spot on the sheet. "Why would you want me to stick around?" You whispered, truly confused by his words. "I only bring pain and suffering. Maybe I'm cursed, I'm not sure, but eventually everyone leaves me."
"That's not true! You bring joy, and confidence. Your fearless smile makes everyone around you feel invincible, and your compassion makes everyone feel safe. I love all that about you! You act like you don't care, but underneath you are always keeping an eye on everyone, making sure they're safe. You try so hard to keep your distance from everyone, but without noticing, you've created a family. It's not a family by blood, but thanks to you, we can all feel close. You hold all of us together, just by being yourself." Conan started to lecture you. Is it considered a lecture if he's complimenting and insulting? What would that even be called? A complisult? I don't know. You thought to yourself with and inward chuckle.
"Just me being around puts you in danger though..." You sighed. It was so hard for you to understand why a person like him would even care about someone like you. He was attractive, intelligent, and loyal. He was the kind of guy that could hang out with whoever he wanted to, and be gladly accepted. Why does he want me to stay so much? He's always getting so angry with me, to the point where I think he hates me, but then he turns around and says stuff like this. Are all boys this confusing?
"I don't care. So what if you're being hunted? I won't let them touch you, or anyone else. You've been given a new chance at life. So, instead of always watching your back, why don't you enjoy yourself a little?" He said with a soft, almost sad smile. The look on his face as he waited for your response, broke your heart. He looked hopeful, like a child awaiting Christmas, but at the same time, he looked like a hurt puppy from one of those depressing adoption videos. After a moment his head fell, and he took a sudden interest in his hands, which he wrung.
Instead of responding with words, you sat up. It hurt, but it was worth it. You leaned forward, and gave the boy a soft peck on the cheek. He looked up at you in shock, his hand over his cheek. His face was the color of a pomegranate. "I forgive you, Judo." You chuckled, as you settled back into the bed.
