The love rivals sped off down the road, leaving Sato to deal with the six Detective Boys. "I thought Detective Takagi was with homicide, not arson." Conan looked at Sato, a little confused.
"Yeah, and why'd they need their guns for an arsonist?" Haibara mumbled.
"A dead body was found at the scene of the fourth fire. We're not sure, but we think they probably witnessed the culprit lighting the fire. That's why I need all of you to stay by my side." Sato replied.
You, of course, were no longer listening. You'd wandered down the alley that Ayumi had seen the culprit in. You were examining the scorch marks around the point of origin, when you felt someone pull on the back of your coat. You tensed, but relaxed when you realized it was Sato. "What?" You asked, seeing her disappointed scowl.
"What did I just say?" She sighed, as she led you out of the alley.
"I dunno. Was it something about Takagi?" You guessed.
"She said to stay put." Conan grumbled like the know-it-all he is.
"Wrong!" You chirped. "She said stay by her side. You have a worse memory than me." You yawned. You froze, realizing you'd been so distracted mocking Conan you'd forgotten you'd said you hadn't heard. You sighed, and put your hands up in surrender. "Fine, I got the message." You leaned against the wall, while Sato asked Ayumi some more questions. You were so bored you started playing a game you'd played as a child to distract yourself. It was a simple game of people watching. You tried to guess their profession based on what you could see. Businessman, student who works at a cafe, retail, teacher, retail, fast food. You mentally rattled off the list.
"Oh, Takagi! Did you get the arsonist?" Sato chimed into her phone, breaking your concentration. "What? You know who killed my father!" Sato shouted into her phone. You straightened up, and walked closer to try listening in on the conversation. You strained your ears to try hearing Takagi, but the sounds of the city were too overpowering. Sato listened for a while, before responding. "And?! Who did it?!" Sato seemed anxious. Another pause followed by panic. "H-hey, Takagi? What's wrong?!" Sato's face turned deadly serious, lined with fear and worry. "Takagi? What happened?" Sato continued. She pulled the phone away from her ear. You could hear the faint dial tone.
You read her expression, doing your best to glean some of the information. Sato called Shiratori, and told him what happened. You looked at Conan, and nodded. You'd both come to the same conclusion. If Takagi had been talking about the killer from 18 years ago, the person who attacked him was probably the same culprit. Which meant, even though the prescription period ended three years ago, something about being discovered worried the culprit.
Conan took the lead. "Those four people we met earlier said they were going to the usual bar. Where is it?"
"The bar is called 'Nanamagari'. It's in front of Shinagawa station..." Sato seemed startled by the unspoken accusation.
"The criminal Takagi was about to oust was one of them. They could have easily overheard Takagi when he tried to call you the first time." You said to Sato, knowing she didn't want it to be true. "They could have attacked him to hide the truth."
"Whatever the case, I'm heading over there. You lot should take a cab home. You can come to the station tomorrow." Sato replied.
"But, if the criminal who attacked Takagi is the arsonist, you need Ayumi to identify him." Haibara stated, not missing a beat. After a little more persuasion from the rest of the brats, Sato finally gave in.
