Conan couldn't understand what was happening. One minute everything seemed fine, the next everything was crumbling. They'd been sitting in the waiting room of the hospital for the past three hours. Nobody wanted to leave, not even for a second.

"Hey, Ran, what did the nurse mean when she said you knew Rin's heart was on its last leg?"

"We came here last week. It was when you and dad were at the bank and got wrapped up in that robbery case. Rin said she didn't want to go, so I stayed home with her. After you two left Rin told me she wanted to go to the hospital. When I asked her why, she just said something was wrong. I took her to the hospital, and the doctors confirmed what she felt. They said she only had a few weeks at best, and that she should stay in the hospital until a suitable donor was found." Ran whispered.

Conan looked down at his hands, kicking himself. He'd been so mad at her for not being there during that case. Someone had died, and he'd blamed (Y/N). Now he understood, and Haibara made sure to drive in the point. When she'd asked the nurse what (Y/N) would have experienced before collapsing, she'd done so knowing the answer. (Y/N) had been struggling all day, just to function, and he'd pushed her. That's what she'd ment when she said she'd come to her senses. Why would she go so far, and not tell me? Conan thought to himself with a frustrated sigh. Then I went, and hurt her. Why did I say those things? Why was I so stupid?! How couldn't I see how much she was hurting?

Conan shook the thoughts away, and turned towards Dr. Agasa. "Hey, Doc, what was it that was going to happen tomorrow?" He asked, trying to take his thoughts away from (Y/N). Unfortunately, cruel fate had other ideas.

"She was supposed to come for the transplant surgery. They told her to go home right after school, and not to overdo it until then." Dr.Agasa whispered the reply.

Conan felt as though someone had punched him in the gut. "I'm going to go use the bathroom." He said just loud enough for Ran to hear. He got up, and walked straight into the nearest men's room. He splashed ice cold water on his face from the sink, before looking up into the mirror. He was shocked to see his wasn't the only face reflected. "H-Haibara? What are you doing in here?"

"I guess you finally understand a little. You let your emotions cloud your judgement, and ended up causing Rin a lot of suffering, maybe even her life." Haibara said in her dull tone.

"Just leave me alone." Conan hissed the reply.

"Very well then. I just came to tell you, I don't know if Rin will ever be able to return to her original form. That is, if she survives long enough." Haibara stated as she turned to leave.

"Hold on, what do you mean?" Conan nearly shouted. At the girl's back.

"Should she survive, she will have the heart of a regular child inside of her body. That being said, it is unwise to assume it will be capable of growing with the rest of her." Haibara told him, her eyes void of emotion. "Just some food for thought." She whispered as she exited the bathroom.

The world seemed to be crumbling around him. "This is all my fault." He whispered to himself in the mirror. He hated himself for what he'd done to one of the most important people in his life. "Dammit!" He cursed as he slammed his fist into the cold porcelain sink. He collected himself, and returned to his seat. After another half hour of waiting, he fell asleep on Ran's shoulder.

Shinichi tried to take in his new surroundings, but it was impossible. (Y/N) stood a few feet in front of him. They were standing in complete darkness, but he somehow knew that just behind her was a cliff. (Y/N) smiled at him before taking a step back. He leapt to catch her, but he failed. She fell into the black bottomless void. "Why? Why didn't I stop her? I should have helped her! This is all my fault!" Shinichi wept into the cold darkness that seemed to leech away all warmth.

"Man, I leave you for a minute, and this is what I return to." A voice echoed all around him. Shinichi turned around, and there she stood. Her mere presence chased away the cold darkness, until they were standing on a hill surrounded by cherry blossoms. She smiled at him with that infuriatingly adorable smirk. "This isn't your fault. I did this to myself." She said with a soft chuckle. "It seems that I just can't help myself." She smiled up at the sky, her face both sad and happy. Without another word, she turned, and the world seemed to bend moving her farther and farther away.

"Wait!" Shinichi shouted, his voice tainted with panic. "Don't leave!"

She turned and gazed at him, her face once again bearing that faint sadness. "I'm not the one leaving." She whispered, her voice nearly cracking under the unbearable weight of her sadness.

Shinichi looked down, and realized she was right. He seemed to float off the ground a few inches, and the wind was pushing him speedily across the ground. He struggled against it, but nothing he did seemed to work. He looked back up at her, and watched as a single tear leaked from her left eye. Her sad smile once again returned, this time delivering all to familiar words. "I thought you were different then everyone else; I thought you understood, but I guess I was wrong." She whispered, her voice finally breaking under the pressure.

Conan wanted to call to her, but his voice no longer worked. I didn't mean what I said! Please, don't leave! I'm sorry! He wanted to scream to the girl, but his voice could no longer reach her. Finally tears began to pour from his own eyes. He pushed in a futile attempt to catch her, screamed in desperate hope to reach her, but nothing worked. The wind tore the words from his lips before they could be uttered, and pushed him back like some invisible insurmountable wall.

Please, don't go, don't leave me! He struggled and struggled in vain, as he watched the girl drift further and further away.

I don't want you to leave! Please, stay with me! I need you! He tried to scream, but the only thing that would come were more tears. (Y/N)! He cried one last time, as she finally disappeared from sight.

---------------------------------------

Conan jerked awake, nearly butting heads with Ran. "Hey, I was just about to wake you up." Ran whispered.

Conan looked at her red eyes, and felt like he himself would break down into tears. "Where's Rin?" He said, biting back the threatening tears.
