The five of you rode in silence. You sat in the back seat with the boys, while Shinichi sat in the front. He kept glancing back at you in the rear view, clearly concerned as to what the plan was.
When the cab finally pulled to a stop, you paid the driver. "Any chance you could wait here for us? We just need ten minutes, max." You asked.
"Yeah, sure." The driver nodded.
"Thanks so much." You turned to Shinichi. "You should probably stay with the car."
"And why would I do that?" Shinichi protested.
"Because a young detective with a platinum record probably shouldn't be involved with this."
Shinichi's eyes narrowed. "You aren't going to..."
"Man, Judo, do you have no trust in my morals! We're just going in to grab Smokes' stuff, that's all. I'm going in to make sure nobody tries to stop them." You clarified. "Just wait here, please?" Your expression was a mixture of puppy dog innocent and mischievous.
Shinichi wanted to protest, but your expression made butterflies tingle in his stomach. How could he say no when you were making that face! He nodded slowly. "Alright."
You beamed. "Great!" You turned to the three boys. "Now, when we go in there I want you two to help Smokes get whatever he wants. Don't stop to talk or listen to anybody. Just get in and get it all. When you're done, come straight out here, and wait in the cab with Shinichi."
"My old man isn't going to let that happen." Smokes grumbled.
"Well, who said I was giving him an option?"
Smokes' looked startled by your words. "He's really violent." He stated, in an attempt to dissuade you.
You grinned. "Good."
You sauntered up the steps, and banged on the front door. It was pulled open by a rather timid looking woman. The smell of beer and cigarettes assaulted your nostrils, and turned your stomach. "Excuse me ma'am, but your son and some of his friends were caught robbing a convenience store. Is there any chance I can come inside to talk for a moment?" You put on your most hospitable expression.
The woman looked past you at the three boys. There was no relief in her eyes at seeing her son, nor concern after what you'd just told her. That's one down. One to go.
"Sure." The woman nodded meekly.
You entered the dank house, with the three boys right on your heels. You glanced back at the boys, and gave them a nod. Without a word, Smokes led the way to his old bedroom.
"Who the hell are you?"
You turned to face a rather scrawny man. He wore a stained t-shirt, and he reeked of alcohol. His stench made Kogoro seem sober. "I'm here with your son."
"That little pu..."
"I'd rather if you watched your language, sir." You stated, still doing your best to stay calm. When you saw the door to the room the boys entered close, you let the facade drop. "Now then, I'll be blunt. I'm well aware of what kind of man you are, and trust me I use the term loosely. I'm simply here to let your son get some things. After this, you won't ever see him again."
"Who the hell do you think you are? You ain't just takin' my kid." The man barked. He said kid like he would refer to a mangy rabid dog that would be better off being put down.
"I'm the one who is going to make sure your son gets a proper education, never goes hungry, and never, ever has to be afraid that some piss ant excuse of a man is going to hurt him. If you call the cops to report this, I will make sure they find every last skeleton in that disgusting closet of yours. Your done, and he is going to have a much better life without you."
