Tues Nov 24
Virgil woke up to the smell of bacon. His mouth watered at the smell. He hadn't woken up to that smell in years. When was the last time he had even had bacon? He grabbed his crutches and after a trip to the bathroom, made his way to the kitchen. Roman was standing by a pan next to his mother laughing. Virgil smiled at the sight. He remembered when he used to help his mother in the kitchen. Back when he was little, he'd get up early with her and they'd make breakfast. His dad would come out grumbling and his mother would yell "Oh no! It's the coffee monster! Quick get him coffee!" His dad would chase him around the house while his mother made him coffee. His dad's drinking wasn't so bad back when he was five.
Roman turned around and smiled.
"Good morning!" Roman sang.
"Morning," he said.
"Did you sleep okay, Dear?" Roman's mother asked.
"Yeah," he said. "Uh... do you need any help?"
She shook her head.
"No, you're our guest, which means you sit down and relax. Roman and I are making eggs and bacon. I know it isn't much but-"
"No! It's fine! I can't remember the last time I've had bacon," he laughed nervously.
"Really?" she turned around startled. "Well then, I hope I do it justice!"
"I'm sure you will," he said as he sat down.
"Well isn't that sweet of him," she teased lightly hitting Roman's arm.
"Mom!" Roman said throwing his head back.
Remus slid into the kitchen on his socks wearing boxers and a T-shirt.
"Ooh! Smells good in here!" He said.
Their mother turned around and swatted at him.
"Remus! Put some pants on! We have a guest!"
"It's just Virgil!" Remus whined.
"I don't care who it is! Put some pants on!"
Remus walked out of the kitchen grumbling before Robert walked in wrapping his arms around his wife.
"Hey," he said kissing her on the cheek.
"What do you want?" She asked.
"I can't just show my wife affection?" He asked.
"You can, but you don't," she teased. "What do you want?"
He raised his hand to his chest to mock offense.
"Why do I always have to want something?"
She stared at him until he put his arm down.
"Okay! Okay! So I was thinking-"
"That's dangerous," Roman mumbled.
"-that we could," Robert lightly hit Roman in the back of the head messing up his hair, "go out to eat tonight. I know you aren't one for fancy dinners or anything, but I figured-"
"Yes!" Remus shouted as he ran into the room again. "Please, Mom, can we go to Darla's?!"
"Ooh! Darla's!" Roman said excitedly. "I love that place!"
"Boys! As much fun as it would be to eat out, I already made plans for dinner tonight. Besides, we have Thanksgiving coming up-"
"And that's a lot of cooking. You could use a bit of a break, don't you think?" Robert said.
She stared at the stove for a minute before sighing.
"Oh, alright! But it's your money!"
The three cheered.
"Thanks, Mom!" Roman said.
"You're the best!" Remus said hugging her.
"What's Darla's?" Virgil asked.
Remus sat down next to him.
"You're going to love it! It's a local diner in downtown. They make the best French toast in the mornings! But they also have really good sandwiches and their desserts are pretty cool too. Last time we went there they had this chocolate chip bread thing... it was really good! Roman and I got the college recruiter to take us last time!"
"Oh yeah!" Roman said as he joined them, Robert taking over plating the eggs. "Gosh, it feels like forever ago. I can't believe it was only a few months ago."
"Can you believe we only met about two months ago?" Virgil asked.
"You've been living with us for almost two months now," Roman said. "Hey, at least you aren't sleeping on my floor!"
"Oh gosh! Yeah, I'm glad Marcus joined the fraternity. I don't know how I'd handle his drunk ass roaming around."
"Virgil," Roman's mother said setting down a plate, "Do you have a place to stay during winter break?"
Virgil nodded.
"Yeah, Janus invited me to stay with him so I could work. He lives the closest I guess," he said.
"Are you going to stay with him over the summer as well?" she asked.
Virgil frowned.
"I haven't really thought about it yet. That's still months away. I definitely plan on taking up more hours over the summer so I can afford a new car and my tuition. Especially since I'm going to have to actually pay to live on campus next semester. I should really get myself a meal plan and such."
"Yeah, no more skipping meals," Roman muttered.
"Well, you're welcome to stay with us over the summer," Robert said as he sat down. "As long as Theresa here is okay with it."
"Oh, of course! Or if you have to work, you can always come visit us! We'd love to have you!"
"Oh... uh... thanks."
"I'm sure we'll see each other some over the summer! All of us have to get together at some point! I can't imagine not seeing everyone for so long!" Remus said.
"Even Logan?" Roman asked.
Remus shrugged.
"I might have more eggs for him yet," Remus grinned.
"How many of those things do you have?!" Virgil asked.
"Don't worry about it!"
After breakfast, Roman, Remus, and Virgil walked around town. Roman shared some of his favorite spots in town. They told stories about their childhood. Remus showed them the streets they used to go biking on and even showed him the plank of wood they used to make ramps. Virgil got to see their old high school and the local theatre where the two used to hang out. Roman told him about one time he messed up his lines and couldn't stop laughing on stage to the point they needed to stop rehearsing and wait for him to finish. Roman showed him where he first tried kissing a girl and realized how awkward it felt trying.
After spending the day out, they met Roman's parents at the diner for dinner. It was a nice little place. They managed to find a table and ordered drinks. Remus was right, which wasn't something he often found himself thinking. The food was really good. He ordered an applewood bacon sandwich which he thought sounded weird, but it was really good. They even made their own chips. They talked about movies and music and the news and laughed with each other. Virgil was starting to feel at home with these people. Robert ended up paying for them and they went back to the house. The three went downstairs to play a board game and talk for a few more hours before going to bed.
All in all, it was a really nice day.
