It all started with a simple comment from Felix during one of the Stray Kids' late-night practices. Everyone was exhausted, sprawled out on the practice room floor, catching their breath. You were there too, as usual, sitting on the side and laughing along with their antics. You had become close with all the members, having met through a mutual friend, and they'd quickly adopted you into their little family. But one friendship stood out among the rest—your bond with Seungmin.
Seungmin, with his dry humor and soft-spoken nature, had a way of making you feel at ease. The two of you often spent time together, whether it was grabbing coffee or hanging out in quiet cafes. Despite the easygoing nature of your relationship, there was an undercurrent of something more, something unspoken between you both.
The others had noticed too.
"I think Y/N and Seungmin would make a cute couple," Felix mused, his voice breaking the comfortable silence in the practice room. He was lying on his back, staring at the ceiling with a small smile playing on his lips.
The room went quiet for a moment, the words hanging in the air, and then Chan's eyes lit up with interest. "You know... you might be onto something, Felix."
Hyunjin, ever the romantic, sat up, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Oh, absolutely. They're perfect for each other. We should help them along."
You were oblivious to this conversation as you were engrossed in a text conversation with a friend. But you could feel the boys' gazes on you and Seungmin, who was sipping on his water bottle with his usual calm demeanor.
Han, who was always quick to jump on any opportunity for fun, grinned. "Operation Couple-Up Seungmin and Y/N is a go, then?"
"Absolutely," Chan agreed, his leader instincts kicking in. "We'll do it subtly, though. We don't want to scare them off."
Changbin chuckled. "Subtle? With us? Good luck."
And so, it began.
The next day, the boys invited you over to their dorm for what they called a "movie night." You agreed, thinking nothing of it, just excited to spend some time with your friends. But as soon as you arrived, it became apparent that something was up.
The seating arrangements, for one, were suspiciously specific. You found yourself on the couch, squeezed between Seungmin and Chan. Every time you tried to move or switch spots, one of the boys would casually suggest that you stay put, offering some flimsy excuse about how it's "better for movie viewing angles."
Then came the snacks. The boys had conveniently forgotten to bring out drinks and, in the most transparent attempt at matchmaking, asked you and Seungmin to get them from the kitchen together.
"Why don't you two go?" Hyunjin suggested, smiling innocently. "You know where everything is."
You exchanged a glance with Seungmin, who shrugged and got up. You followed him to the kitchen, feeling a little flustered by the obvious attempts of your friends. As you both reached for the soda at the same time, your hands brushed, and you felt a spark that made your heart skip a beat. You quickly pulled your hand back, laughing it off, but Seungmin seemed unfazed, his calm exterior giving nothing away.
"They're being really obvious, aren't they?" Seungmin finally said, his tone casual, but there was a hint of amusement in his eyes.
You bit your lip, trying to suppress a smile. "You noticed too, huh?"
He chuckled softly, handing you a soda can. "Hard not to."
Back in the living room, the boys were clearly expecting something to have happened in the kitchen—anything, really. But you and Seungmin returned with nothing but drinks and the same comfortable dynamic you'd always had, which earned a few disappointed looks.
The boys weren't ready to give up, though. The next day, Chan decided that the two of you needed to work on a project together—something about "team bonding." The task was simple: reorganize some old Stray Kids merch that had piled up in the dorm's storage room. You didn't question it, just happy to help out. Seungmin, ever the diligent worker, didn't bat an eye either, but you couldn't help but notice the satisfied looks the boys exchanged when you both agreed.
As you and Seungmin worked side by side, you found yourself laughing more than working. Seungmin's dry humor was in full swing, and you kept teasing him about how meticulous he was being about the organization.
"You know, they're totally trying to set us up," you finally said, unable to hold back any longer. You were both sitting on the floor, surrounded by old posters and T-shirts, and it felt like the perfect time to address the elephant in the room.
Seungmin looked at you, his eyes searching yours for a moment. "Yeah, I figured," he replied with a small smile. "Does it bother you?"
You shook your head, feeling your heart flutter at the way he was looking at you. "No... I guess I just didn't realize they saw us that way."
"Well," Seungmin said, his voice dropping to a softer tone, "maybe they're not wrong."
Your breath caught in your throat as he reached out, gently tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. His fingers lingered for a moment, his eyes never leaving yours.
"I've been meaning to tell you for a while," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "I like you, Y/N. More than just a friend."
You felt your face heat up, your heart racing at his words. "I like you too, Seungmin."
The confession hung in the air between you, both of you smiling shyly at each other. It felt like the room had suddenly grown warmer, the space between you shrinking as Seungmin leaned in slightly.
Just as your lips were about to meet, the door burst open, and Felix popped his head in. "How's the organization going—" He stopped mid-sentence, eyes widening as he took in the scene. "Oh."
Seungmin sighed, clearly annoyed at the interruption, but you couldn't help but laugh. Felix's face lit up with realization, and he grinned widely. "I knew it!"
The rest of the boys quickly appeared behind Felix, all of them trying to act casual, but their excitement was palpable.
"So..." Chan began, trying to hide his smile. "Anything new with you two?"
You rolled your eyes, but Seungmin just smiled, taking your hand in his. "Yeah, something like that."
The boys erupted in cheers, high-fiving each other like they'd just won a game. It was impossible not to laugh at their enthusiasm, and soon you and Seungmin were caught up in the moment too.
As the evening went on, the boys teased you both relentlessly, but it was all in good fun. You and Seungmin didn't mind, because now, the unspoken feelings were out in the open. And when the night ended, and the boys finally left you both alone, Seungmin turned to you with a soft smile.
"Do you want to go on a proper date sometime?" he asked, his voice full of sincerity.
You nodded, your heart swelling with affection. "I'd love that."
And just like that, Operation Couple-Up Seungmin and Y/N was a resounding success. The boys, of course, took all the credit, but in the end, you knew that it was something that had always been there—just waiting for the right moment to blossom.
