"Hey, B." Quinn said, trying to sound casual as she entered the six-year-old's room.
Beth looked at Quinn, her small face breaking into a big smile as she hurried to greet Quinn. "Hi, Mommy!"
"Hi, Beth." Quinn replied, holding the blonde. "Whatcha doing?"
"I'm drawing." Beth answered. "Come see."
Quinn followed Beth back to the table and eyed the drawing.
"That's me and Mommy." Beth explained, pointed at the two yellow-haired stick figures. "And that's Daddy up there in the airplane."
Quinn took a deep breath and swallowed hard, her throat tight as she stared at the image.
"It's beautiful, B."
Beth looked at Quinn, and it was as if she knew something was wrong.
"Beth." Quinn began, her voice barely above a whisper. "Let's take a break and sit down for a second, okay?"
Beth tilted her head slightly to the side as she looked at her mom. "Why?"
"I wanna talk to you." Quinn continued as she sat down on Beth's bed and extended her arms. "Come here."
Beth hurried over to Quinn and climbed into her outstretched arms.
"Beth, I..." Quinn paused, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to spill. "I know how much you've been missing your dad. And I've been missing him, too."
"When is he coming home?" Beth asked.
Quinn took a deep breath as she looked at the blonde. The beautiful blonde baby girl in her arms resembled Quinn so much, but Quinn only saw Puck in her. Beth was the best of her parents though, and was so sweet and innocent.
And Quinn was about to take that from her.
"He's... he's not coming home." Quinn choked the words out, knowing that saying it made it real, and it being real broke through everything she'd been holding in since she got the news.
"What?" Beth asked, confused. "Why not? Daddy said he's gonna be here for Christmas."
Quinn's chest tightened, her heart breaking all over again. She knew Beth barely understood death and the permanence of it, but losing Puck would rip her apart, as it did Quinn.
"Daddy can't come home." Quinn told Beth, exhaling slowly to keep herself from breaking down.
"Why?" Beth demanded, confused and frustrated.
"Sometimes when people go away in the military, they don't come back." Quinn informed Beth, tears pooling in her eyes. "And Daddy's gonna go to Heaven now, like Uncle Finn."
Beth's lip trembled as she looked at Quinn. "I don't want Daddy to go to Heaven with Uncle Finn. I want him to come home!"
"I know." Quinn whispered, holding Beth tightly. "I'm so sorry."
"I want Daddy! I want him to come home!" Beth sobbed against Quinn's chest.
Quinn gently rocked Beth back and forth in her arms, crying along with her. "Me, too."
